DaltriDiluvi: This was a spectacular endgame, but not a flawless one. Both players were probably in time trouble.

  saffuna: Here's the game: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HcqRa...

Complete with overheated but informative commentary.

At one point the players were smiling at each other, when Anand had his pawns on a7 and e7.

71...c1N certainly came as a surprise.

Turns out what the players were laughing about was that 65...c1Q would have led to a stalemate after 66. Qe3+.

Check It Out: This is an amazing game. I haven't watched any of the analysis links above, but I think Anand resigned early. Time was a factor and there are still multiple ways to go wrong as black at the end.
Jul-07-23  tympsa: Anand resigned in time.
Of course black would not promote right away, because after 73...c1 =Q 74.Qxc1+Nxc1 75.h6 white h-pawn would run away and promote. It would be advantage white, but outcome is not clear. That is how 1200 player would play . Carlsen is 2800+

After 73...Be4 74 .Qd6+Ke1 75 Qb4+ Kf1 76. Qc4 c1=Q+ 77.Qxc1 Nxc1 78. Kxc1 black has bishop + pawn against white 2 pawns and way better position of black king. To stop that h-pawn is not so complicated. It is amazing what these super GM-s can calculate in few seconds .

Jul-07-23  cocker: The last few moves don't make much sense. The Times has White resigns after Black's 70th.

MissScarlett: The extraneous <71.Qb6 Nc1 72.Qc6 Ne2 73.Kb2> was added just to see if anyone was paying attention. Well done that man!
Jul-07-23  dehanne: A comedy of errors.
Oct-05-24  zooter: 60.Nxf5 was a blunder by Anand. Although the commentator (Sagar Shah) seems to think there is counter-play by white, the engine evaluation on the screen just goes down completely for white which I believe means a forced win for black

  Sally Simpson: Hi Zooter,

Of course the players cannot see the evo bar but they can sense counter-play, blunder prone positions and trickery. All three were on display here. 60.Nxf5 was a good practical OTB try.

The Bishop is not going to stop both passed white pawns. (counter-play)

Anand was alert to the stalemate trick before Carlsen. (trickery) The baffled look from Carlsen and then the smile confirm that. (see the vid from 15:30). https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=d...

It nearly worked because Carlsen, with one eye on the clock, slipped in 65...Be4 a move I think everyone but an engine would play. (blunder prone positions)

A few moves later;

67.Qb6 instead of 67.Qd4 and Anand has a draw with either stalemate or three fold rep. Carlsen's alert under promotion was something no one saw coming. (trickery with a touch of luck and a dash of genius.)
