PeterLalic: Behold Salem's 18th move! I am speechless.

Black to move. Last: 18.Ng3.

May-16-24  EvanTheTerrible: The Salem Fish Style.
May-17-24  goodevans: What an amazing game!

The N-sac may not have been entirely sound but you have to give your opponent the opportunity to make mistakes and that's exactly what it did.

The game is pregnant with possibilites. What happens, for instance, after <23.Bxc5 Bxc3+ 24.bxc3 Rb2!>? The analysts will have a field day.

26...? (Black to move) would make a great puzzle

... leading to a finish that was absolutely exquisite.

May-19-24  EvanTheTerrible: <BxChess> can you explain the pun to those of us who are more simple-minded?
May-19-24  BxChess: <EvanTheTerrible:> Its a play on the song title 'working nine-to-five' (what a way to make a living). It was also a movie featuring Dolly Parton. I read recently that they are planning a remake, so it is quite topical.

MissScarlett: The full <GOTD> title should be <Work in Ne5 (what a way to make a killin')>, but it was mangled by the software. Soon - one hopes - to be corrected.
May-19-24  Cecco: White missed the Nf6+ continuation twice. The first on the 26th move and he would have maintained a superior position. The second two moves later and it was the only way to resist. So you can enjoy the final combination without being a GM and without an engine having to tell you about it.

It's just come back as a musical touring the UK - something I didn't know when I submitted the pun. In a bizarre coincidence, I found that out a couple of hours later when my wife told me that she'd just got tickets to it.

Teyss: Amazing game, good pun highlighting the first sac (mangled by the software in a strange way: it removed here the part between brackets and added "by" on the homepage. Or was it an original typo instead of "but"?).

Not the best defence by White, which is good else it would have deprived us from a spectacular finish. As pointed out by <cecco> he should have tried 26.Nf6+ and actually could have until move 28: Black cannot move the K because of the threat Rxh7+ so after 28...Bxf6 29.Qxe6+ the mating threat is gone even if the position is inferior.

Great weekend puzzle 29...? (you have to calculate what happens if White doesn't accept the Q sac) and mid-week 30...? Very rare to see so many sacs at GM level in classical time control.

On the one hand <goodevans> is happy his pun is selected, on the other (1) he has to go to the musical and (2) has to pretend he likes it.

OhioChessFan: I'd recommend <goodevans> start working now, if not sooner, on his answer to the inevitable question:

"Didn't you just love the female empowerment theme?"

perfidious: A question only 'inevitable' in the mind of someone who is only too obviously obsessed over that question.

saffuna: I have no idea if 18...Ne5 was sound. But it sure looked tempting with white's position a total mess. The king was out in the great wide open, and the f1 bishop hadn't moved, shutting in the a1 rook.

In any case, white felt obligated to return the piece with 23. 0-0-0.

  takebackok: Andy Soltis NY Post puzzle black to play and win after 28. Kd1. Just in time for the beautiful 28...Qxh5! Best is 29. Rg4 Ra1+ 30. Bc1 Bf4 31. Ke1 Bg3+! 32. Kd1 Ra2 & mate in 9.
