Aug-19-03  refutor: can someone recommend a good dragon book? i'm looking to treat myself ;)
Aug-19-03  Benjamin Lau: Let's have a poll! How many of you guys think this formation really looks like a dragon?
Aug-19-03  Alchemist: I never even made that correlation. It's supposed to look like a dragon?
Aug-19-03  ughaibu: Does the Sicilian Pelican look like a Pelican?
Aug-19-03  Benjamin Lau: <I never even made that correlation. It's supposed to look like a dragon? >

Yes. That's the reason they named it the Sicilian dragon. It's not just because it's extremely violent and aggressive.

<ughaibu>

You tell me. :-)

Aug-19-03  Alchemist: And for that matter how did they arrive at the name sicilian? I happen to know that it was not created by a sicilian.
Aug-19-03  Benjamin Lau: <I happen to know that it was not created by a sicilian. >

That's fascinating. I have heard that it was named the Sicilian because it was analyzed by a chess openings master from Sicily.

Aug-23-03  Marnoff Mirlony: Sac, sac, Mate. This opening is hardly worth the time it took to create it.
Aug-23-03  seoulmama: Marnoff, u r obviously lacking when it comes to understanding dynamics in chess. Quoting Fishy isn't very original.
Aug-23-03  Marnoff Mirlony: Wow, you knew Fischer said that, good one. You're like, a quotational expert or something. I wouldn't have quoted him if it wasn't the truth.
Aug-24-03  Benjamin Lau: M&M, how do you know it's the truth?
Aug-24-03  Pawnographer: Agreed. The Soltis variation kinda put a halt to that sac sac mate concept
Aug-25-03  Marnoff Mirlony: I know it is the truth because Fischer proved it. Just because he isn't here to continue proving it doesn't change anything. At his time of playing, he was untouchable in the Dragon(obviously as White since he wouldn't play such a weak Opening as Black).
Aug-25-03  Wild Bard: <About it looking like a dragon>

I read that it was named after the constellation Draco the dragon, which does look similar to the pawn formation.

Anyways, look at the board from black's side, imaging the c pawn is back, and then look here at this picture of the loch ness monster :)

http://www.cdaccess.com/gifs/screen...

Aug-25-03  Marnoff Mirlony: I do believe that that picture of the Loch Ness monster is completely true and was not forged or fabricated in any way, shape, or form.
Aug-26-03  Benjamin Lau: Marnoff's latest comment appears to be an attempt to provoke yet another argument. I get the feeling that Marnoff doesn't really believe even half of what he says and that he simply relishes attracting attention.
Aug-26-03  DTI: About it the pawn structure resembling a dragon... I think its completely true, and they couldn't have picked a better name. the pawn on g6 is the tail and the pawn on d6 is the open mouth... and I guess the blazing fire is spewed forth down the c-file... great name.
Aug-26-03  Marnoff Mirlony: Actually, Benjamin Lau, I was just stating that I believe the validity of the picture. I wasn't arguing with anyone or looking for one. Perhaps it is you trying to get an argument started. Just drop it, stop crying.
Aug-26-03  myratingstinks: MM, you obviously spend a tremendous amount of time analyzing RJF's life & games. Maybe you should spend some quality time analyzing yourself & your unhealthy fixation with RJF & the people on this board who disagree with you. It doesn't take an RJF IQ to figure out that you need some help. I am not trying to insult you. Rather, I am trying to help.
Aug-26-03  Marnoff Mirlony: Whatever you say.... Quite the critic yourself. You seem upset, what's wrong myratingstinks? Has everyone in your life turned their backs on you and you're turning here to get all of your anger out? Turn your anger inward, bottle it up. Anger held in it better than anger unleashed.
Aug-26-03  uglybird: <Marnoff Mirlony> <Benjamin Lau> Why do you fellows persist with your never ending arguments all over these boards. This page is about the Sicilian Dragon, not about Benjamin Lau and Marnoff Mirlony arguing once again.
Aug-26-03  Benjamin Lau: <uglybird>

Of course this page is about the Sicilian Dragon. That's why I asked the question "How many of you guys think this formation really looks like a dragon?" So why are you being off topic, ugly bird? Why didn't you post anything on the dragon?

In my opinion, the formation does look like a dragon, or at least as close you can get to that in chess anyway.

Aug-26-03  Jonber: I don’t think the dragon formation resembles the dragon imagery common to most Western myths, as seen in St. George and the Dragon or in the stories of J.R.R. Tolkin for instance.

However, it strongly reminds me of the dragons of Norse mythology, so much in fact, that at the age of seven, when I hardly knew openings had names at all, I named a similar structure "lindedrage", the Norwegian word for Norse dragons.

I also think it resembles the dragons of Chinese and other Asian myths, which, as far as I recon, has the same slick bodyshape found in the Norse myths.

Perhaps someone can enlighten us on when and where, and perhaps from whom, the dragon variations was given their name?

Aug-26-03  Marnoff Mirlony: Funny how I've seen you post absolutely nothing relevant yourself, uglybird. Wipe the tears and go on with your life.
Aug-27-03  Doctor Who: Marnoff, uglybird is an excellent poster. He's probably a very strong player. Click on his name and read his comments on some other games before you go saying that he never posts anything useful... that is, if you are interested in chess at all.
