Black usually eliminates his Dark ♗ by playing Bb4 and Bxc3+, doubling White's queenside pawns to prevent their advance while he prepares to stir up trouble on the kingside. After 3.g3, White has the option of playing e2-e3 and Nge2, and an eventual f2-f4. This last move not only thwarts ...f5-f4, it also keep the Bc8 penned behind the f-pawn. Feb-06-05    Helloween: On the other hand, the statistics seem awfully good for Black in 3.g3. If you follow the main line in this database it goes up to move 14 with 4 different alternatives for Black: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... The Light ♗ goes to e6, usefully controlling d5. Also, I don't think that g2-g3 necessarily thwarts f4; in fact, it may give Black a target to attack and forcefully pry open the f-file with or even advance to f3. In 3.Nf3, usually when the Knight gets pushed with e5-e4, this creates a weak square at f4 which can be exploited(Ng5-h3-f4). In any case, the English systems with an early f7-f5 for Black are quite double-edged. Feb-07-05    An Englishman: Good Evening: I've seen those statistics, and they were very surprising to me. All I know is that *my* statistics were quite good. Perhaps this line is my personal Albin Countergambit--stinks for most people, works great for me? Aug-06-05    melianis: i've had only bad experiences as white in this opening, but then i'm mostly a queen's gambit/catalan player. trying catalan type setups against this has lead to very complex games.
