Jun-12-04  Spectre: Number 1 Bosnian. he likes solid positional play.
Oct-04-04  tacticsjokerxxx: is this guy still playing chess?
Oct-11-04  yoozum: looks like he gained some points. i'll be rooting for him and hope that he enters the 2700 club. (i have some distant relatives in sarajevo, and i just discovered that). so now i also root for the bosnians/herzogovinans.
Oct-12-04  milanez: one of two top bosnian players for years(ivan sokolov is the other one though due to civil war he refugeed to netherlands and took their citizenship, nikolic went there as well during war, but came back and continued playing for BiH)
Oct-12-04  yoozum: i'm guessing sokolov is not native to bosnia because his name is not bosnian or yugoslavian. it sounds much more russian and ukrainian.
Oct-12-04  yoozum: and that's pretty smart of sokolov. i think most people would rather play for the netherlands than bosnia and herzegovina.
Oct-13-04  yoozum: http://schach.wienerzeitung.at/asp/...

i wonder why he's not on the bosnian team.

Oct-23-04  milanez: actually sokolov was born in bosnia, and represented it in 1994 chess olympiad where Bosnia won the silver medal and he was part of bosnian 1996 olympiad team as well

http://198.31.92.32/Olympiad/stand9...

http://198.31.92.32/Olympiad/bih_fr...

as for his last name..well people from that area are from slavic background and you will find plenty of last names that sound very russian(he might as well have some russian blood, you never know)

Oct-23-04  yoozum: -ov ending names are usually from russia, ukraine, belarus, bulgaria and typically ex-soviet areas, but not from the yugoslavian area. -ic is very common there, which is why i was initially curious.

i mean, my names ends in -ov and i'm from russia lol.

Oct-23-04  Knezh: -ic would actually be pronounced as
-itch.
Oct-23-04  yoozum: yeah, i know. morozevic...morozevich.
Oct-23-04  tex: -ov in the last name is a little unusual in fmr yugoslavia, but not unheard of.
Oct-23-04  milanez: my last name is vasilj and it comes very close to say vasily in russia, and many people find it unusual but from what i know, never heard of any russian ancestors in the family...i wonder is there a way to somehow trace the root of your family name to where it originated
Oct-23-04  yoozum: i was trying to find something like that too, but i think that mine is most nearly from russia and possibly ukraine.
Oct-25-04  mahmoudkubba: This player seems to have lota of draws..
Oct-26-04  yoozum: he doesn't seem to have many more draws than most 2600+ players on this site
Oct-26-04  Hidden Skillz: yoozum i was born in bosnia, sarajevo..n ye it does sound very much russian but there r many ivans matter fact i had a friend called ivan..im not so sure if sokolov is written wit an s or ลก which is pronounced "sch"..
Jan-31-05  notyetagm: Look like Nikolic is going to lose around 48 elo points based on his atrocious -5 performance at Corus B.
Jan-31-05  Champ Supernova: Sokolov is actually Kramnik's real last name as well. And there are -ov's in the former Yugoslavian countries that don't necessarily have russian roots.
Jan-31-05  hintza: <Look like Nikolic is going to lose around 48 elo points based on his atrocious -5 performance at Corus B.> If my calculations are correct Nikolic's rating change for Corus is -45.8. Certainly, things could have been worse for Morozevich it seems!
Jan-31-05  csmath: <<-ov in the last name is a little unusual in fmr yugoslavia, but not unheard of.>>

Actually it is very usual in the eastern part of the country, what used to be Yugoslavia, meaning in Serbia and Macedonia.

Jan-31-05  csmath: Nikolic and Sokolov are the last generation of Yugoslav chess. If Yugoslavia stayed together others would follow. This way they are the last products of that once powerful chess nation, now a basket case in every way.
Jul-10-05  stinky2: <csmath> There are some very good young players in ex-Yugoslavia, like Borki Predojevic (b.1987) and Ante Brkic (b.1988).
Aug-08-05  yoozum: Markus Robert (Lord Malshun on Playchess) is also quite good. He played very well in the Euro Team Championships and I expect that he will soon pass 2600.
Jan-08-06  Petrosian63: This guy is a very solid player.
He has won Corus twice.
