Apr-23-06 | | Karpova: related to Jan Timman ? |
Apr-23-06 | | vonKrolock: His brother, so far I can recall from my on-brain database |
Apr-23-06 | | Karpova: thanks!
he was born in 1948 but i don't speak dutch: http://renzoverwer.web-log.nl/archi... |
Apr-23-06 | | vonKrolock: The first reply in that interview (translation by babelfish (computer):<I typed in my name on Internet, and I saw that I existed still as a schaker. I was a beetje such as Doornroosje which was awoken to life. Very strange, but also complete pleasantly. Thirty years barrel Timman (digs, 1948) affected the pieces scarcely to, but since beginning July he has played chess. After tournaments in Helmond and Haarlem, the older brother of Jan took part in hendrik in the group A of the Amsterdam Chess Tournament. After the sixth round want be he return comment.>
"Jan Hendrik" is Timman |
Apr-23-06 | | vonKrolock: <I was a beetje such as Doornroosje which was awoken to life> hmmm... maybe better "I was SOMEHOW like THE SLEEPING BEAUTY wo was awoken to life... 'a beetje' would be 'ein bisschen'!? - and 'Doornroosje' is Grimm's 'Dornröschen', la Belle au Bois Dormant |
Apr-23-06 | | sneaky pete: <vonKrolock> You guessed right: "I was a bit like Thornrosie (= the sleeping beauty)" etc. The name Ton (Antonius, Tony) can also be a noun, meaning, among others things, cask or barrel. |
Apr-23-06 | | Karpova: that's quite interesting. i was already wondering what <barrel Timman> could mean. |
May-21-06 | | technical draw: This guy is pretty good. Went 30 years between losses. (1975-2005) |
May-21-06 | | Caissanist: There have been many sets of brothers(and of course one of sisters) in chess, and it's almost always the younger one who's best. The only exception that I know of is the Portisches. |
May-21-06 | | Karpova: <(and of course one of sisters)> what about the kosintseva sisters? |
May-21-06
 | | offramp: <Karpova: <(and of course one of sisters)> what about the kosintseva sisters?> That's the sisters he meant. You should have asked, "What about the Polgars?" |
May-21-06 | | Caissanist: <Karpova> thanks, I'd forgotten about them. It's interesting that there have been very strong brothers as well as sisters, but no brother/sister acts. Here's a quick list of strong chess siblings, with the older player listed first. Here by "strong" I mean "both strong enough to gain an international title". In every case other than the Portisches and perhaps the Byrnes, the youngest was strongest. Berthold and Emanuel Lasker
Mikhail and Vladimir Makogonov
Endre and Lajos Steiner
Lajos and Ferenc Portisch
Robert and Donald Byrne
Jan and Ton Timman
Paul and Jay Whitehead
Marcel and Jeroen Piket
Susan, Sophia, and Judit Polgar
Nadezhda and Tatiana Kosintseva
Rauf and Nidjat Mamedov (not 100% sure they're brothers) Can anyone suggest any good additions?

This is what a dutchman makes of it ;) ..
I typed in my name on the Internet, and I saw that I still existed as a chess player. I was somehow like the sleeping beauty which was awoken to life. Very strange, but als completely pleasant. For thirty years long Ton Timman scarcely played chess. But since the beginning of July he has played chess. After tourrnaments in Helmond and Haarlem, the older brother of Jan Hendrik (=Jan Timman) took part in group A of the Amsterdam Chess Tournament... |
May-21-06 | | Karpova: <but no brother/sister acts.> what about the mamedyarov family?
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
Zeinab Mamedjarova

(chessgames.com switched the forname and surname of Turkan) |
May-21-06 | | Karpova: The Muzychuk sisters:

May-21-06 | | Caissanist: Thanks much for all the feedback, there are indeed a lot of strong chess siblings. Azerbaijan seems to be the world capital of fine young chessplayers at the moment; does anyone know if the Gashimovs or Guseinovs are brothers as well? |
Dec-13-06
 | | Gypsy: Frantisek Treybal + Karel Treybal Frantisek (*1882, best rank ~#40) was older, Karel (*1885, #15) stronger. |
Dec-27-06 | | Caissanist: User: Karpova has confirmed that Vugar and Sarkhan Gashimov are indeed brothers. Once again, it is the younger one (Vugar) who is stronger. |
Jan-10-07 | | Caissanist: IM Eugene Meyer (b. 1952) and FM John Meyer (b. 1944). |
Jul-26-07 | | noTALent: I read Amalie Paulsen was supposedly a very good player and sister of Louis Paulsen
and Wilfried Paulsen but maybe she rarely played publicly/officially? The recent Dutch Women's Championship featured Marlies Bensdorp ("Current FIDE 2227", finished 3rd) and Laura Bensdorp ("Current FIDE 2119" finished 7th) |
Jul-27-07 | | Calli: David Graham Baird and John Washington Baird |
Aug-19-07 | | Caissanist: According to User: tabanus, GM Kjetil A Lie and IM Espen Lie are brothers. The two are also grandsons of, yes, Odd Lie. Honest. |
Aug-19-07 | | Karpova: Father: Henrik Carlsen Daughter: Ingrid Oen Carlsen Superstar: Magnus Carlsen |
Aug-19-07 | | EeEk: GM Krum Georgiev
brother
GM Kiril D GeorgievI don't know of any other GM siblings. |
