Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-11-14  wordfunph: from BCM February 1997..

<The crucial result was 4.5/5 outright first place at the Mill Hill Congress of 1996. Paul was attending Gary Quillan's wedding in Liverpool on the Friday before the event, was singing in the Adelphi bar until 5.30am, and then realised that there was an important tournament in less than five hours! He got the 6.15am train, arrived at the event in time for the repairing and never looked back...>

Sally Simpson: I wonder if this is the same Kelly.

John Henderson writes in CHESS, January 1997 that he met Garry Kasparov at Selfridges whilst Garry was on his tour of England promoting 'Kasparov Chess Computers' and handed him an official letter making him an honorary member of the Scottish Chess Association due to him rehabilitating the Scotch Gambit in his match v Karpov.

From Selfridges they went to the Chess Centre, then on Euston Road, and Garry saw Paul Kelly playing against Fritz 4 on the shop floor.
So round about move 9 Garry joined in and together they played v Fritz4 (talk about being in the right place at the right time.)

Garry stayed till move 48...

Kelly and Kasparov were White.

...when the game was won and Paul played on mating Fritz4 on move 73.

Final position.

Apr-14-25  Nosnibor: "Kelly and I meet secretly" song by Del Shannon! I am sure however that this was not the case in the meeting of Paul and Garry.
