Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-28-10  whiteshark: Name: Lajos Merenyi
Birthdate: 1884-Jan
Deceased: 1936-Apr
Nationality: HUN

Chessmetric ranks him #65 in 1913:
http://db.chessmetrics.com/CM2/Play...

Wrote "Prince Paul Esterhazy" (Hung.) (Budapest, 1895). http://openlibrary.org/b/OL18551627....

Nov-05-13  Karpova: Lajos Merenyi won the 36-player Main Tournament (not to be confused with the Master Tournament) in Györ 1924 and so became Hungarian Chess Association Champion 1924. He had been Hungarian cycle race champion and marathon runner.

From page 244 of the September 1924 'Neue Wiener Schachzeitung'

Nov-07-13  Karpova: Crosstable of the Main Tournament in Györ 1924 (see my post above):

1. Lajos Merenyi 8.5 ($20, Champion)
2. G Pal Rethy 8.0 (1,400,000)
3-4. Jakob Walter 7.0 (1,000,000)
3-4. Friedrich Thelen 7.0 (600,000)
5. Arpad Jakab 6.5 (500,000)
6-7. Kalman Kulcsar 5.0 (450,000)
6-7. Barna Dalmy 5.0 (400,000)
8. Miklos Szigeti 4.5 (350,000)
9-11. Ernö Földessy 4.0 (300,000)
9-11. Josef Rasovsky 4.0 (275,000)
9-11. Konrad Demeter 4.0 (250,000)
12. Walter Schwimmer 2.5 (200,000)

Merenyi scored +8 -2 =1 (losses against Walter and Thelen, draw against Jakab).

This was the <Siegergruppe> (Sieger = winner, Gruppe = group/class)*.

From page 288 of the October 1924 'Neue Wiener Schachzeitung'

* this is a possible explanation for the discrepancy to my above post about 36 players and now only 12: Several preliminary groups and the best players advanced to the <Siegergruppe>.

Jan-23-16  TheFocus: Happy Lajos Merenyi.
Aug-10-19  wordfunph: IM-caliber Lajos Merenyi.
