(born Mar-06-1988, 32 years old) Iceland
[what is this?]
FM (2007); International Master (2009); Iceland Champion (2014 and 2017); 1 GM norm (2014)
Gained his IM norms at the Caissa IM August 2005, the Tenkes Kupa Open Championship in Hungary in November 2008 and at the First Saturday IM (B) in June 2009.
Winner of the City of Sabadell International Open 2013, =2nd at Hastings Chess Congress (2014), winner of the Championship of Iceland in 2014 (winning a GM norm) and =1st at the San Salvador Open 2014.
In the latter he missed his his 2nd GM norm despite scoring 4/5 (+3 =2) against his GM opponents (including Eduardo Patricio Iturrizaga Bonelli and Alejandro Ramirez Alvarez) as his first three opponents, whom he defeated, had ratings over 400 or more less than himself. This resulted in reducing the rating average of his opponents in the event below the threshold of 2380 allowed under FIDE Regulations for determining GM norms. (1)

|Jul-12-08|| ||alexapple: How to pronounce Kjartansson?|
|Jul-13-08|| ||DukeAlba: Icelanders' last names are patronymic. Kjartansson means "Son of Kjartan. It's pronounced Key-artan's son...|

|Jan-16-13|| ||BIDMONFA: Gudmundur Kjartansson|
|Jun-02-14|| ||diagonal: GUDMUNDUR KJARTANSSON IS ICELANDIC CHAMPION 2014. Congrats!|
<Surprisingly, nobody of the Grandmasters emerged a winner, but the 26-year-old IM Gudmundur Kjartansson, who finished first with 6,5/9 points, leaving the nearest followers a full point behind.
GM Hedinn Steingrimsson and the 12-time-Icelandic-champion GM Hannes Stefánsson shared second place with 5,5/9 points each, but Steingrimsson took the silver on superior tie-break score>:
A report and picture of the new champion:
|Jan-28-15|| ||Penguincw: Congrats to Kjartsson for his start at the Tradewise Gibraltar (2015). He won his first game and then beat Bartel with black! Tomorrow, he has white against Bachmann.|
|Jan-29-15|| ||Penguincw: Another round has passed, and Kjartansson (my apologizes for the spelling mistake in the above post) remains a perfect 3/3. He is not only the lowest rated player to still have a perfect score, but the only IM.|
While he managed to beat each of his first 3 opponents (including 2 2600+ GMs), he has black against Svidler (!) tomorrow, who happens to have a lower score (2.5) than him.
|May-28-17|| ||kamalakanta: Gudmundur, congratulations on winning the 2017 Icelandic Championship!|
I looked at all your games. You played with great energy and enthusiasm! Strong, good chess throughout!
with best wishes,

|Mar-06-19|| ||Penguincw: Happy Birthday to IM Gudmundur Kjartansson.|
