[what is this?]

Aung Aung is an International Master from Myanmar (Burma).

In 2000, Aung lost 100 rating points due to a FIDE decision to adjust ratings of all Myanmar players rated over 2100. This was done as it was believed that some of the strongest Myanmar players boasted ratings well above their true strength.

ganstaman: <Warrush> The misspelling of 'manual' was likely on purpose, as it's a joke (sounds like a Mexican name...).

The rest -- who cares but you? Oh my, he spelled some words wrong? I guess he knows nothing of schools then. Because only the educated elite care enough to spell check their posts.

And anyway, he's right. The average American knows little about geography. It's not one of the things we stress as much as other countries. It's not all that useful in day to day business, so most people here either don't learn it or forget it as soon as they do. It's just a different culture here than elsewhere in the world -- it surprises me that that still surprises others.

May-06-07  Warrush: <ganstaman> well im an american high schooler, thats why it made me mad. I don't like other people stereotyping america, and I don't like americans stereotyping other countrys. As a college student, you must feel somewhat angered when someone puts down american education.

ganstaman: <Warrush: As a college student, you must feel somewhat angered when someone puts down american education.>

I'd be angered if someone made ignorant, hate-inspired comments about American education. But when I agree with them? One thing I've learned while at college (not necessarily from being in college) is how many ignorant people there are in this country.

Take pride in your personal education, but I don't know if I can take pride in too many other Americans' education.

May-06-07  Warrush: <ganstaman> Agreed, but cuendillar stated americans dont know nothing of the world map, which to me, is stereotyping. But your right, I shouldn't of been mad with tech draw, as his comment was actually funny.
May-06-07  Warrush: <technical draw> I appologize.

This is understandable. And just because things don't bother me doesn't mean I should expect them to not bother others.

It was probably the spelling comments that got me most. It wasn't even your point, but it's what pushed me to post.

So anyway, back to a player with the same first and last name. Anyone know of anyone else like that?

Eric Schiller: <Warrush>It is an empirical fact that the typical American knows less geography than the average European. So it isn't stereotyping as long as you don't say a specific writer is a geography idiot because he's American.

I'm an American who teaches kids English, among other things. And as with most of my colleagues, I can confirm that the average American understanding of geography is very deficient, though our ruler, King George, is spectacularly ignorant and should not be taken as anything typical of Americans in any way.

This is a fault that can be corrected, and I hope that when President Gore gets to work, he'll make it a priority.

technical draw: Hey,<Warrush> no nead to apolagize. Most of my coments are meant to be funnie. If ever I get into a serious argumment, just shoot me! <ganstaman> That's for coming to my defence (defense).....TD
May-06-07  Warrush: <Eric Schiller> Is gore even running? I thought it was clinton, obama, and edwards. Hopefully gore is running because I dont really like any of the others in the primary.
May-06-07  Warrush: <ganstaman> Does Carl Margot Carls count?
May-06-07  gBizzle: i will probly shoot myself is Gore is president
May-06-07  Chess Classics: <I can confirm that the average American understanding of geography is very deficient> Seconded, heartily. Especially at the high school level. Let me relate one example-of course there are statistics that speak for themselves, but I thought I'd chime in here.

I mentioned that I had a friend from elementary who moved to Oslo. An acquaintance of mine-a 9th grader-said, "Where is that?" I was slightly surprised, although in retrospect, I really shouldn't have been, since, well, it's not that obvious. So I explained that it's in Norway. Here comes the crusher:

"So isn't that, like, in southeast Asia?"

Of course, that pales in comparison to his comment when I mentioned the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in the same sentence: "Aren't those in France or something?"

Okay, I'll stop ranting. Out of curiosity, and to give me a pretext for posting here...anyone know what Aung's rating was before he lost 100 rating points in 2000?

May-07-07  Caissanist: Aung's rating on the January 2000 rating list is 2595. The January 2001 list has him at 2494.

According to the FIDE website, since 2001 he has gained rating points in every single tournament that he has played in inside Myanmar, and lost points in every foreign event.

I came across a chessplayer called "Tran Tran" some 20-odd years ago.

Jun-26-13  The Last Straw: Why does his FIDE rating card say he is unrated?
Jul-12-13  The Last Straw: Oh now I realized Myanmar doesn't pay dues to FIDE, so the players don't get standard ratings.

BTW, look at this Oops!
