Feb-11-09  whiteshark: Quote of the Day

" Chess is the game which reflects most honour on human wit. "

-- Voltaire

Feb-11-09  Octal: <whiteshark>: I don't think it's the same Voltaire who said that. Did you ever hear of the French philosopher named Voltaire who lived from 1694-1778? Also, beside from the fact that this person didn't live in the right time period, Voltaire was only a pen name of the philosopher.
Feb-11-09  drkodos: François-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778), better known by the pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, and philosopher known for his wit, philosophical sport, and defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and free trade.
Feb-12-09  TugasKamagong: François-Marie Arouet had exactly the same name as his father, so he appended the phrase "le jeune" to his name, usually abbreviated to l.j. His nom de plume is an acrostic of Arouet, l.j. Under classical rules, one is allowed to substitute v for u and i for j.

As for the chess player Voltaire Sevillano, he's from Cebu in the Philippines, younger brother of IM Enrico Sevillano.

Suspicious much?

I wonder if it's this "Voltaire" or some different one.

alexmagnus: <The> Voltaire played chess too, but looks like no games survived.

perfidious: Will Enrico Sevillano defend Voltaire's right to play, no matter how weak his play may be?
Feb-20-18  zborris8: Voltaire, or Francois Arouet, if you care. It's a respected name, not bandied - to be perfectly Candide.
