Mar-03-12  timhortons: im a product of public school system in the philippines.when i was in elementary grade, among the things our history teacher let us memorize is the word <taft commission>

howard taft is the first american governor general in the philippines. The taft commission prepared filipinos to self government. That after they completely defeated in battlefield, filipino freedom fighters<they term those people as insurrectos, rebels>.

picture of governor taft riding carabao< a beast of burden for filipinos farmers>

poor carabao, taft is a huge man.

history teaching in the philippines is done mainly by letting the student memorize the acronyms, dates of birth of hero and date they die, seldom the whole story behind the date, life of a person is thoroughly discussed and analyzed.

the exception is rizal.

Mar-03-12  timhortons: taft avenue in manila

Mar-03-12  timhortons: its actually the taft commision who chose rizal to be the national hero of the philippines:)

among other choices are mabini and bonifacio and aguinaldo.

Phony Benoni: <timhortons> Famous joke about Taft's size ... at least in the United States. President Theodore hears that his friend Taft is ailing in the Philippines, and they exchange cables:

Roosevelt: How are you feeling?

Taft: Just fine. Went on a horse ride through the mountains yesterday.

Roosevelt: How is the horse?
