Aug-11-09  badchessplayer: If he learned to avoid getting hit by parking gates, maybe he'd be an even better player.

Aug-11-09  swordfish: Actually, this guy had a good U.S. Open this year. As I recall, he was playing on first board in the penultimate round, losing to Lenderman.

  DrNyet: Hilton on Chess Cosmopolitanism (2011) http://www.uschess.org/content/view...

"I was winning a big enough share of the prize funds to keep me more than afloat financially as I romped around the U.S. tournament circuit. I felt focused and motivated. My rating was climbing, and the FM title was just within reach."

I didn't know you could eek out a living by being (approximately) a mere master.

Jan-24-24  CountryGirl: Jonathan Hilton co-wrote the 3-volume series "Wojo's Weapons", a brilliant exposition of GM Alexander Wojtkiewicz's openings as white. Nowadays he is a top legal eagle, partner in his own law firm: https://hiltonparker.com/jonathan-h... Don't know how his chess is (or if he still plays!)

I didn't know you could eek out a living by being (approximately) a mere master.>

I looked up the major tournaments he played in 2009. The instances of his winning a prize were apparently the following:

* April 2009, Foxwoods Open (Connecticut), $1749.00 for 1st/2nd Under 2300

* May 2009, Chicago Open, $1066.67 for 3rd/5th in the Under 2300 section.

So, perhaps in saying "keep more than afloat financially," Hilton meant that his winnings more than covered his tournament-related expenses.

  perfidious: A while back, I recall reading an article which pegged the average income of a GM as being roughly $35,000.

To win class prizes, it goes almost without saying that one must perform significantly above expectation. For a 2300 player to 'eke out a living' takes lessons and possibly YouTube videos if one is agadmator or Alexandra Botez. Travelling to tournaments will not cut it. This is not poker.
