Feb-07-10  whiteshark: No, it's neither the planet nor the god, it's just Neptune (Computer)
Feb-07-10  RandomVisitor: Actually, from what I recall, Arno Nickel played several computers simultaneously in a correspondence tournament, and the names of the programs themselves were not identified to Nickel. Instead, the machines were referred to with the names of the planets as a kind of pseudonym. So, "Neptune" might have been a program such as Shredder or Junior.
Feb-07-10  whiteshark: <RandomVisitor> Yes, sure.

It was the so called "Planetenmatch" (match of the planets) where corrGM Nickel played against several Programms of at that time unknown identity (the alias was the name of a planet). I think the engines had 24 hours per move and had to move the first choice.

Here are the names:
[planet = engine operator = engine - pairing - result]

<Venus> = Michael Koppel = Junior 8 - Nickel-Venus 1/2

<Mars> = Patrick Götz = Hiarcs 9 - Mars-Nickel 1-0

<Pluto> = Harald Faber = Tiger 15 - Pluto-Nickel 1/2

<Saturn> = And Schwartmann = Deep Fritz 8 - Saturn-Nickel 1-0

<Jupiter> = Martin Müller = Shredder 7/8 - Nickel-Jupiter 1-0

<Neptun> = Markus Pillen = The King 3.23 - Nickel-Neptun 1/2
