Soviet representative at the 6th World Junior Championship, The Hague, August 12th - 2nd September 1961. He came third after Bruno Parma and Florin Gheorghiu although he defeated both of them.

1970 fand der Russe <Alexander Kuindzhi> eine Widerlegung von Mitrofanows Lösung. Man versuchte in der Folge, die Ausgangsstellung zu korrigieren, um die Lösung zu retten.
