ARYAN TARI
(born Jun-04-1999, 26 years old) Norway

[what is this?]

Aryan Tari was Norwegian Junior Champion (2012), earned the IM title in 2013; won the Norwegian Championship in 2015, became a GM in 2016 and was World Junior Champion in 2017.

Tari was Norway's #1 junior and ranked in Norway's top ten of all players as of January 2016.

Master Norms

<IM norms> Tari's first IM norm came at the 2013 Norwegian Open in 2013 (this was also a GM norm). He won his second IM norm at the Sveins 6th Memorial Tournament in June 2013 and his third norm came at the Norwegian Championship (2013). Subsequently, he won another IM norm at the Politiken Cup (2013) and 5.5/9 and an IM norm at the RTU open A (2013) in Latvia.

<GM norms> Tari won his first GM norm at the Norwegian Open in 2013 and subsequently won a double GM norm at the European Team Championship in 2015 on 22 November. His rating of over 2500, combined with his GM norms met all the criteria for the GM title, which was ratified by FIDE at its first quarter Presidential meeting early in 2016. At the date of effect of his GM title, he was aged 16 years 5 months and 18 days.

Championships

<Youth> Tari finished equal eighth in the 2008 U10 World Championship, tied for sixth in the 2009 U10 World championship, and was unplaced but scored 7.5/11 in the 2010 U12 World championship.

<Junior> In July 2012, Tari won the Norwegian Junior Championship with 8/9, 1.5 points clear of the field. In October 2014, he scored 8/13 at the World Junior Championship and repeated that score in the same event in 2015, placing fifth ex aequo.

<National> Tari finished equal third at the 2009 Norwegian Open Championships with 5/7, behind Joachim Solberg and Pal Andreas Hansen, earned an IM norm at the 2013 Norwegian Championship with 5/9. Won the Norwegian Championship in 2015 with 7/9.

<World> In November 2017, Tari became World Junior Champion with 8.5/11, on tiebreak ahead of Manuel Petrosyan and Chithambaram V R Aravindh.

Tournaments

Tari was winner of the under 1950 prize at the 2010 Gibtelecom challengers division. He competed at Gibraltar Masters (2013), scoring a solid 5.5/10 and at the Reykjavik Open (2013), Tari scored an even more solid 6.5/10, these events adding nearly 30 ratings points to his card.

One of Tari's best results in his early career was the 2013 Norwegian Open, when he scored 6/9 to place seventh, where he scored his first GM norm. He scored a strong 6/9 at the Sveins 6th Memorial Tournament held in June 2013, 7/10 at the Politiken Cup (2013) and 5.5/9 at the RTU open A (2013) in Latvia. Tari scored a strong 7/10 at the Politiken Cup (2014), two points from the lead. In September 2014, he won the Krager Grand Prix A 2014 and in 2015 Tari scored 7/9, half a point from the lead at the Vienna Open. He also tied for second at the Vasteras Open 2015.

Team events

<National> Tari represented the Norway 2 team at the Tromso Olympiad (2014) on board 4, scoring a rating-enhancing 4.5/9. He also represented Norway at the European Team Championship (2013) and at the European Team Championship (2015), scoring a double GM norm at the latter, thereby meeting the final criterion for the GM title.

<Leagues> Tari first played in the European Club Cup in 2011, when he played board 4 for the Norwegian team Asker SK. He did not play in the ECC again until 2015 where he played on board 2 for the Norwegian Club VĂ¥lerenga SK. In 2015, Tari started playing in the Iranian Superleague, the Norwegian Premiere League and in the German Bundesliga, representing the SC Hansa Dortmund club in the latter.

Nov-18-09  Caissanist: Is "Aryan" a common name in Norway/Scandanavia?
Feb-20-13  waustad: If you look at his player card, he's very active. I guess Carlsen is causing something like the Fischer bump in interest in the US. I know that that is the time I started taking chess more seriously, though unfortunately I was already in my 20s. Players now can do so much on line! I wonder what a site like http://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics... would have done for my game while I was 50 years younger.

perfidious: That would be a classic matchup indeed.
Apr-02-13  EvanTheTerrible: Carlsen mentioned Mr. Tari in the press conference after having won the 2013 Candidates tournament. He scored a GM norm before even achieving any IM norms.

Apr-07-13  fromoort: <Caissanist> "Aryan" is not an uncommon name in the Indian subcontinent. Aryan Tari's parents are from Iran.
Jun-05-13  MoonlitKnight: Aryan turned 14 yesterday. I first met him when he was 5 years old, and it was already apparent that he was a great talent. I briefly trained him when he was 7. His calculation was lightning fast. When I tried to teach him how to mate with bishop and knight he basically saw the moves before I even showed them to him.
Jul-10-13  EeEk: Aryan just completed all the requirements for the IM title and is set to become one of the youngest IM's in the world at 14. Full report: http://bit.ly/1dhmnVs

Damn!

And Ushenina could not even find the moves for the <BISHOP AND KNIGHT MATE> when she badly wanted to.

Oct-02-14  waustad: He is listed as "invited" to the World Junior Championships in India starting this weekend. I doubt that he'll be going since he is playing in the Oslo Open right now. The final round in Oslo is the same day as the opening in Pune. Looking at the players listed, the Western Hemisphere has been largely ignored. http://www.worldjuniorchess2014.com...

WannaBe: Take a 1/2 pt first round bye. =))
Oct-06-14  waustad: Actually he didn't play in the final round in Oslo and he is in India playing M. Abhijith (2127) right now.
Oct-07-14  waustad: It is almost amazing how few of the games at the WJCC are actually being broadcast. Chessbomb has lots listed, but very few of them actually work.
Oct-09-14  Chessinfinite: The WJCC is a tough event and Mr Tari will have a to show something special to win this event.

< "Aryan" is not an uncommon name in the Indian subcontinent. Aryan Tari's parents are from Iran. >

No, 'aryan' is not a common name in the Indian subcontinent, how much ever a few like to cook up such an idea. However, the associated symbol in Europe in that time, does exist in India, and is very prominent. In India, its usage stands for good luck and good will, and in India, its usage predates the usage of it in other parts of the world by at least a millennium.

Oct-09-14  EdZelli: The name IRAN in persian means 'The Aryan Nation' or the "country of the Aryans". Persians consider themselves aryan and rightfully so.
Jan-28-15  JonDSouzaEva: He's getting beaten to a pulp by Richard Rapport at the moment: 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 d5 3. e3 Nbd7 4. Nf3 c5 5. c3 e6 6. Nbd2 Be7 7. Bd3 O-O 8. a4 b6 9. Qb1 Bb7 10. h4 h6 11. Bf4 Ng4 12. Ng5 Ngf6 13. Rh3 Qc8 14. Ndf3 hxg5 15. hxg5 Ne4 16. Bxe4 dxe4 17. Kd2 g6 18. Qh1 f6 19. Rh7

egilarne: Congrats to Aryan Tari as Grandmaster!

He secured the Grandmaster title at the European Team Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland today! 5,5 points in the first 8 rounds is enough: He just needs to show up tomorrow and play one move, he may lose this last round. According to FIDE handbook a GM norm of 9 games in continental team championships counts as a 20 game norm. He has a 9 game norm from several years ago, and has had a rating of more than 2500 for some time. He will become the 12th GM from Norway at the next FIDE meeting.
