Master qualification and norms

<FIDE Master> Atabayev became an FM in July 2010 when he crossed the 2300 rating mark.

<International Master norms> (1) Atabeyev won his IM norms at the:

- GM Tournament in Moscow in February 2011 when he scored 5.5/9, half a point above the requisite for the IM norm;

- 13th Dubai Open (2011) in April 2011, when he scored the requisite 5/9; and

- 14th Dubai Open (2012) in April 2012, when he scored 5.5/9, half a point above the requisite for the norm.

<Grandmaster norms> He won his first GM norm at the First Saturday GM May 2013 with 9/12, half a point above the requisite score and his 2nd at Zonal 3.4 in 2015 with the requisite 7/9.

Championships

<Youth> Atabayev's first FIDE-rated tournament was in the World U12 Championship played in Belfort in July 2005 (result unknown). He was 6th in the Asian U18 Championship in 2009 and =3rd at the 6th World School Chess Championships (U17) held in Turkey in July 2010.

<National> His second FIDE-rated tournament appears to have been at the Turkmenistan Championship of 2007, where he placed =3rd behind Annaberdi Esenov and Suhrab Semiev. In 2008, he placed 5th in the national championship, in 2011 he was 2nd behind Meilis Annaberdiev, in 2012 he was =2nd behind Maksat Atabayev and in 2015 he was 5th.

<World> He won 2nd place at the Zonal 3.4 played in Dushanbe in June 2015, which qualified him to play in the World Cup (2015) and provided him with his second GM norm. (2) At the World Cup, he provided stiff first round opposition to Alexander Grischuk, drawing with him in the standard time set, as well as in the two sets of rapid tiebreakers before going down in the blitz tiebreaker to exit the competition.

Tournaments

He was second in the 18-player round robin Turkmenistanyn bas baslesigi in April 2010, scoring 12.5/17, half a point behind the winner Maksat Atabayev. =2nd in the World Youth Stars event of 2011 behind Karen H Grigoryan. He won his first GM norm at the First Saturday GM May 2013 with 9/12.

Team events (3)

<Olympiads> Abatayev has represented Turkmenistan in the Olympiads of 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014, most recently on board 2. He played board 2 for Turkmenistan in the U16 Olympiad staged in Burdur in 2010.

<National and Regional> He played in Turkmenistan's First League in 2008. He also played in Turkmenistan's Galkynysh club in the First Asian Club Cup in 2008 staged in Al Ain.
