Mar-05-16 | | luftforlife: This concords with the mention of Derwin Kerr by Al Horowitz in his Chess column in The New York Times dated November 1, 1964, wherein, reporting the results of the Columbus Day Open staged at the I.B.M. Country Club in Poughkeepsie, New York, he mentioned "Derwin Kerr, New Jersey" as having finished with a 4-2 result. Here's a link:

Mar-05-16 | | luftforlife: In The California Chess Reporter, Vol. VI, No. 5, December 1956, there is a three-paragraph write-up about Derwin Kerr by Charles B. Walker at page 96, followed by the game D. Kerr-E. McCormick, annotated by Kerr, at pages 96-97. That game -- which was won by Kerr playing White when Black resigned after White's fortieth move, which Walker described as showing well Kerr's "typical tenacious style," and which is not yet uploaded here -- apparently does not stem from the 1956 U.S. Open, even though both players finished strongly in that twelve-round tournament (Edgar McCormick with a score of 8.0 and Derwin Kerr with a score of 7.5). The tournament table hosted here shows no such game between those two players: 57th US Open (1956)
Accord Bill Wall, "1956 U.S. Open":
http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com/a... Walker does point out that Kerr was twenty years of age in 1956 -- either at the time Kerr played in the 57th annual U.S. Open in July 1956, or possibly at the time of publication of Walker's appreciation of him in December 1956. The former seems more likely. Here's a link:

Mar-05-16 | | luftforlife: From a biographical page on fold3, which features information about American veterans, I believe Derwin Kerr was born on February 12, 1935, and died on November 8, 2002. In his appreciation of Kerr in The California Chess Reporter, Vol. VI, No. 5, December 1956, at 96, Charles B. Walker made mention that Kerr had been attached to March Air Force Base at Riverside, California when he had played for the Riverside chess club, and that Kerr had stopped at Oklahoma City in July 1956 to play at the U.S. Open while en route to Texas, to an air base in which state he had been transferred. Mar-09-16 | | luftforlife: Here is D Kerr vs E McCormick as I've transcribed it from relative notation into absolute notation. This game, reported by Charles B. Walker in The California Chess Reporter, Vol. VI, No. 5, December 1956 as "Game No. 360 -- Albin," begins as a Queen's Gambit Declined, Albin Counter Gambit, and, like this game, B Wright vs Z Kartal, 1996, with which it is identical through 7. . . . de3, emerges as the Lazard Gambit in the Chigorin Defense to the Queen's Gambit Declined, ECO Code (D06). Mar-10-16 | | luftforlife: To use the proper terminology, the moves of the sourced game above originally were typewritten in descriptive notation (with interlarded annotations by Derwin Kerr I've omitted), and I've transcribed them into minimal algebraic notation (not figurine, but otherwise the format followed here on <cg>). |

Apr-19-16 | | luftforlife: Sorry to have muffed the transcription on the first go-'round. Here are the correct moves for this game, transcribed afresh from descriptive notation into standard algebraic notation and checked using a reliable PGN reader: [Event "?"]

Thanks again to <Phony Benoni> for his hard and good work on this tournament, and for bringing Derwin Kerr to the fore by submitting another of his games from this tournament as a POTD. Here's his kibitz, which put the bit in my teeth: C C Crittenden vs D Kerr, 1956 (kibitz #36). |

 | | Phony Benoni: <luftforlife> I was just about to start submitting a batch of 256 games from Oklahoma City, including Kerr - McCormick. When this is finished we will have eleven of Kerr's twelve games from the tournament. |
|
May-02-16 | | luftforlife: <Phony Benoni>: That's great news! Should I hold off on submitting the PGN above (hope I got it right) in favor of your batch submission? Happy to proceed as you advise. Thanks. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <luftforlife> If you don't mind, I'll go ahead and send it in. It's really easier for me to keep track of that way. I appreciate your efforts. I'd like these US Open collections to be as complete as possible. That's a big job, and I'm very grateful for assistance. Just a couple of things about your PGN. FIrst, the "EventDate" should contain only the date when play began. Also, thought it's not mandatory, I think it is very helpful to used the form of name already established in the database; for example, Edgar Thomas McCormick |
|
May-02-16 | | luftforlife: <Phony Benoni>: Please go ahead; I defer to you in all respects. :) Batch submissions are preferable, and it's best that I not submit a duplicate game. Thanks for the feedback on the PGN. I will proceed as you indicate regarding "EventDate," and I'll use the form of name already established in the database. I try to link player names into kibitzes whenever possible; I hadn't known it was desirable to use those forms for PGNs here too. Thanks again, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance with Oklahoma City. Happy to help, and eager to learn. I'm excited about these games! Derwin Kerr was quite a player, and this was quite a tournament. Glad you're at the helm. :) |
