  mifralu: Arvīds Kalniņš http://www.olimpbase.org/playersx/9... did not play in Munich 1936, but < Indriķis Heinrihs Kalniņš. >

https://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indri...

Google translate:
Indriķis Heinrihs Kalniņš (February 15, 1895, Riga - September 15, 1968 in Kalamazoo) was a Latvian and US chess player.

Graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Latvia, then worked as a secretary to the Ministry of the Interior. He was an active chess player and organizer of chess life. < He participated in the Latvian Chess Championship three times, but in 1936, he represented Latvia's team at the informal chess Olympiad in Munich as 2nd Reserve (+3, = 4, -1). > [1]. In 1937 he was elected cashier of the Latvian Chess Federation. [2] In 1938, a representative of the Latvian Chess Team in the match between Latvia and Estonia [3] In 1938, he was the leader of the Ministry of the Interior Chess team in the 5th National and Municipal Chess Team Tournament. [4]

In the years of World War II, they have been refugees. He was initially at various camps for displaced persons in Bavaria, where he also lectured on the history and development of the chess game [5]. In 1947 he won the Chess Speed Game in Reagensburg [6].

Later he moved to live in the United States, where he lived in Michigan. In 1953, together with Edmars Mednis, Nikolaj Kampars and other Shah-players of Latvian origin, participated in the US Open Chess Championship. [7] In 1955, with 6½ points out of eight probable, he won second place in the Michigan State Chess Championship and lagged behind the winner Leonid Dreiber for only half the point. [8] In 1956, he won the Kalamazoo Chess Championship. [9] Until the end of his life, he participated in the work of the US Latvian organizations. [10]

Sep-29-18  chesshistoryinterest: At the suggestion of <jessicafischerqueen>, I have copied the post below from the <Vladimir Petrov> page to here. To help clarify the confusion of the three Kalnins (Arvids, Arnolds, Indrikis):

<Sep-29-18 chesshistoryinterest: Slight correction to my above post: I would have given the impression that I thought that every time from 1930 to 1946 that Di Felice says "Arvids Kalnins", it is in fact Arnolds Kalnins. There is one exception: for the 1936 Munich Olympiad, Di Felice says "Arvids Kalnins", when in fact it is Indrikis Kalnins. That there are definitely three of these Kalnins is shown by the 1938 Latvian rating list compiled by Betins ("Rigasche Rundschau", 14 May 1938, Page 17.). (They are rated 10, 20, 21.)

http://www.periodika.lv/periodika2-...

I find the high rating given to Arvids a bit surprising as I have found no evidence of activity by him since at least 1930. Perhaps it's based on his performances in the 1920's. [There was apparently quite a bit of controversy over this rating list by the Latvian players - even an Estonian newspaper commented on it!]

On the "Arvids Kalnins" Page, the win there over Alekhine in the clock simul, Riga, 13 September 1935, is also by Arnolds (Rits, 15 September 1935, Page 15).

http://www.periodika.lv/periodika2-...

The crosstable that I gave above shows that the game that <Hemy> provides of Petrovs' win over "A. Kalnins" in the 1935/36 Riga Championship is in fact over Arnolds Kalnins as opposed to Arvids Kalnins.

The <Latvian Encyclopedia of Chessplayers> mentions Arnolds Kalnins, but doesn't seem to know much about him. He seems to be a fairly active middle-ranking player.>

Also, jessicafischerqueen's relevant post from that page:

Premium Chessgames Member jessicafischerqueen: <chesshistoryinterest> Sadly, we seem only to have a player account for <Arvids Kalnins>, but as you can see <mifralu> has also been working on this difficult disambiguation as well.

Possibly you might add your new information to his in the kibbutz box on this page? Once our new management starts processing correction slips and new game uploads again, it might even be possible to create proper player pages for the two "missing Kalninses".

<chesshistoryinterest>

There is some progress to report on <Kalninses>.

Arnolds Kalnins

and also <Indrikis Kalnins> who is listed at cg.com in German version:

Heinricks Kalnins

The Encyclopedia of Latvian Chessplayers may have a scant entry on <Arnolds Kalnins>, but in the case of Game Collection: Riga 1940 National Team Candidates , it proved valuable.

Rusbase only lists <A. Kalnin> in the crosstable for this event: http://al20102007.narod.ru/nat_tour...

But I just discovered that the Encyclopedia gives a game score that is identical to one of the game scores I downloaded from rusbase:

===

<Arnolds Kalnins confirmed> Encyclopedia of Latvian Chessplayers Vol. I, p. K-11 gives the same game as below:

[Site "Riga LAT"]
[Date "1940.??.??"]

[Black "Dreibergs Leonids"]
