Feb-10-13 | | Gely of the Horde: From "A Selection of Games at Chess, Actually Played by Philidor and his Contemoraries", George Walker, published by Sherwood, Gilbert & Piper, London, 1835: <At the death of Mr. Atwood, and on the consequent dispersion of his books, the greater part of his Chess-papers fell into the hands of his friend, Joseph Wilson, Esq. F. A. S., on whose library shelves, for many years, they quietly slumbered. Mr. Wilson belonged himself to the Philidorian set, and was no mean performer. He appears to have assisted Mr. Atwood with occasional contributions, and to have thus taken a share in the formation of the MS. collections alluded to. Mr. Wilson died three years back, and, on the sale of his library, the whole of these MSS., comprising nearly twenty volumes of various sizes, were bought by Mr. Thorpe, the bookseller, of Bedford-street, Covent Garden. . .> Joseph Wilson is incorrectly identified as Jonathan Wilson in several games v. George Atwood. |

 | | jnpope: <Are there any living chess-players who have played with Philidor?—Yes, many; the Right Hon. Sir Wm. Alexander and Sir Giffin Wilson, both memebers of the St. George's Chess Club, have played with Philidor frequently. Philidor has not been dead quite forty-five years.

Jun-18-18 | | zanzibar: As noted in <Gely...Horde>'s post, Mr. Joseph Wilson died in 1832, and it is through his estate sale (Southerby's auction) that Walker had access to the source material for his book. Should try to find his dob, and other factors about his life. As for Giffin Wilson, he died in 1848 according to <jnpope>'s link - so he might be related, but he's not the same guy as Joseph. |
