Sep-21-11  LIFE Master AJ: Rene told me at the tournament - and many people confirmed this - that he was a former master.

The above? One crosstable that confirms what I said above ...

Sep-24-11  skytzo985: Not knocking Rene at all (he's a strong player and a wonderful guy) but I don't like the idea of basing your entire career on one opening system. That must get boring after a while, even if it's effective. I had that conversation with Adam Caveney a while back. Adam only plays 1.f4 as White. He does well in tournaments, but I think he'd get destroyed in match play. What do you think, AJ?

perfidious: <skytzo985> There have been top players who used this strategy, such as Andrei Sokolov and Mark Taimanov, but Nunn noted already in the mid 1990s that a more flexible approach to things was likely better, and with powerful engines, this has been borne out.

It's also a matter of personal preference; in the 1980s, I averaged 150+ games per year, facing a lot of other masters, and much of doing battle with those players was constant adjustment; moreover, I got bored playing the same things all the time, even in cases where I was successful.
