 | | Phony Benoni: <Leslie F Ault> was the father of Robin Ault, three-time US Junior Champion, and <Leslie Hastings Ault>, who won the US Intercollegiate in 1960 and contributed to the books "Genesis of Power Chess" and "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess". All three played at the US Open at Cleveland in 1957. Dad did the best, scoring 7.5/12, with Leslie H. scoring 7.0 and Robin 6.0. |

 | | OBIT: Robin Ault also has the dubious distinction of pulling an "anti-Fischer" at the 1959-60 US Championship, losing all 11 games. He was seeded in the championship after winning the US Junior Championship in 1959, the first and only time the winner of the US Junior received such an invitation. After the 0-11 result, the organizers decided that inviting the US Junior Champion wasn't such a great idea and stopped doing it. |
|
Dec-19-12 | | Caissanist: Although they stopped doing it after the Ault debacle, the USCF revived the practice of seeding the junior champion into the US Championship in the seventies, and intermittently since then. |

There <was> something in Al Capone's Vault.But it wasn't Leslie F Ault. |

 | | HeMateMe: I heard they found an empty wine glass. It was the height of Heraldo Rivera's career. |

 | | FSR: <HMM> "When the vault was finally opened, the only things found inside were dirt and several empty bottles including one Rivera claimed was for moonshine bathtub gin. Despite the ending, the special became the most-watched syndicated television special with an estimated audience of 30 million. After the show, Rivera was quoted as saying 'Seems like we struck out'. However, in his 1991 autobiography Exposing Myself, he wrote, regarding the event, 'My career was not over, I knew, but had just begun. And all because of a silly, high-concept stunt that failed to deliver on its titillating promise.'" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_M... btw, his name is spelled <Geraldo>. |

 | | HeMateMe: Thanks, I'll put that away in my short term memory, should I ever bump into the great man. A girl I used to work with told me she was dancing with him at a bar one night, on the upper east side of manhattan. Here's the Heraldo interview with McCartney, '79, before Lennon was killed. Funny moment, when Paul compares Gerald to Tony Orlando. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUzs...> |

 | | offramp: His name is spelled Tony Horlando. I'm not sure where he's from. |
|
Feb-03-24 | | wrap99: Geraldo despite the occasional silliness is actually a mensch: he rescued a mentally normal man from an institution where his parents had placed him because he had cerebral palsy. If every human did as much for his fellow humans as Geraldo Rivera did, we would be living in an excellent world. |
