Mar-12-04  Benjamin Lau: Is this the same person as GM Tony Kosten? He (Tony Kosten) has a really cool site I just discovered, wish I saw it earlier. (Chesspublishing.com)
Mar-19-04  Benjamin Lau: Hmmmm, but GM Tony Kosten plays the English and other assorted flank moves as white, no such opening here so I guess this isn't him. But I can't find any other Kostens in this database, I guess Tony isn't in here.
Mar-20-04  sleepkid: It might be Tony Kosten, but with only 156 games in the database, you probably aren't seeing a wide selection of his openings.
Mar-20-04  ughaibu: Looking at the dates and opponents of the early games it seems certain to be the same Tony Kosten (how common a name is it?).
Mar-20-04  Benjamin Lau: I guess you guys are right, but he plays the English very consistently in tournaments, yet there is not a single English game in this db attributed to him as white! He wrote a famous book on that opening "The Dynamic English" which most people use as the main guide.
Mar-21-04  Dudley: Concerning Tony Kosten's games- there are at least 5 games in his collection where he is playing the English as white: see games 133,137, 139,143,and 149.
Mar-21-04  Benjamin Lau: Dudley, you're quite right, I don't know how I missed them earlier, I thought I had tried using the chessgames.com search, I guess I must have inputted the wrong fields. Here are the rest http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... Still, that's not a whole lot of games out of 156.
May-04-04  Everett: I think Kosten started playing the English heavily, almost solely, over the past 5 years or so, allowing him to quickly become well-versed in the ins and outs of the opening.

I'd play the English but the Symmetrical variation drives me up a wall.

Jun-16-06  BIDMONFA: Anthony Cornelius Kosten

Aug-21-06  HolyKnight: I looked at Kosten's recent games. To me he is playing a Reti/English or e4 as white. He is not playing 1.c4, 2. g3 as white as his book recommends you to play. Simon Williams is still playing the Clasical Dutch now in 2006! I guess which author backs his bood best?
Aug-21-06  HolyKnight: book sorry not bood
Sep-11-06  Brown: <HolyKnight> If I had a bood, I'd back it too! The Classical Dutch. Does Webb play the Bird as white?
Jun-30-07  FICSwoodpusher: I see that this nice game is not yet in the database:

Jul-17-07  alter: Kosten's book "The Dynamic English" has to be one of the best repertoire books ever written. Also, his articles in Kingpin are highly recommended.
Sep-09-07  tammany: Mr. Kosten. I've owned your "Easy Guide to the Najdorf" for at least a year now. I love the Najdorf. If it didn't exist I honestly don't know if I would love chess as much or even at all. I will soon take up the mantle for the KID in my repertoire and I hope to say the same then. Happy Trails to you....
Sep-09-07  tammany: ... and How do you know when you're ready for the poison pawn?
Sep-09-07  tammany: And Gata Kamsky was on ICC earlier tonight chatting in 103 and then playing regular people 3 2 from his laptop. It felt special. Thank You Gata.
Jun-07-08  Zygalski: If you can get hold of a copy, Kosten's "Latvian Gambit Lives!" is the definitive guide to this ultra-sharp opening. 224 pages of incredibly detailed analysis covering all likely lines. I suggest going to amazon then using the "used & new" section. You should be able to get a new copy for under $10 US or around 5.
Jun-07-08  Nikita Smirnov: I like his book The Latvian Gmabit.

chessgames.com: We found some sources indicate that Tony's birthday is July 24th (not the 27th as shown above). For example, Polish Wikipedia (http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthon...) as well as our prolific kibitzer BIDMONFA.

Can anybody confirm the true birthday?

Jun-07-08  Karpova: <chessgames.com>
Jeremy Gaige gives his birthday as July 24th also.
Jun-09-08  Nikita Smirnov: <Can anybody confirm the true birthday?>

Yes,he himself.
But if I'm right there are some books where it is written 24th July.I don't remember which book.Bur I think it was written by a person who knows him well.

Jul-24-08  rjfsworstnightmare: Happy Birthday Tony! I like your book on the Philidor, how White can favorably open up the semiclosed position to advantage... Winning doesn't suck!! Thanks!!!
Jul-24-08  brankat: Happy Birthday Anthony!
