Feb-29-04 | | ConLaMismaMano: Remarkable player this GM Alonso Zapata from Colombia, in the recent Carlos Torre Memorial, he reached the semifinals against players with much more elo than him. This shows that the ELO, many times means nothing. |

|
Sep-15-05 | | Queens Gambit: I dont see how in Gods name Anand-Zapata can be in notable games of him, that was a horrible blunder of Anand, not a great game of Alonso, i will start making a nice collection of Alonso Zapata to show here that he has some great games. |

 | | pawn to QB4: Hi Queens Gambit - let's be having the Zapata collection already! While trying Opening Explorer (to find out how my game yesterday should have gone) I came across this corker: A Zapata vs Y Gonzalez, 2001. Maybe the purists will compare it to a game from a simul but I thought it lots of fun. |

May-06-13 | | vanwely: Got to meet GM Zapata today in Atlanta. He won the Georgia State Championship. |
|
Jun-28-14 | | diagonal: His bio needs a little refresher:
Alonso Zapata is <twice winner of the traditional Capablanca Memorial> (most often, but not always played at Havana). Zapata won shared 1st at <Cienfuegos 1980> with Lubomír Ftácnik and at <Matanzas 1994> joint with Loek van Wely and Tony Miles. Zapata tied for 3rd-4th at Havana 1983 (that Capablanca Mem was won by Lev Psakhis). Zapata played tevlve times for Colombia in the Chess Olympiads (1978–1992, 1996–1998, 2002 and 2012, eight times on board one and three times on board two). Hopefully, we will see him again at Tromsø 2014. He finished second, Sub-Champion behind Artur Yusupov, in the 16th World Junior Chess Championship at Innsbruck 1977. |
