MissScarlett: Western Morning News, March 12th 1934, p.8:

<For many years chess champion of Devon County, Mr. Thomas Taylor, of 6, Devon-terrace, Mutley, Plymouth, died early yesterday morning after a short illness, at the age of 74. He was removed to a nursing home last Thursday, where he died. A single man, he lived at Devon-terrace with two sisters, Miss E. Taylor and Mrs. M. Lean.

Owing to failing eyesight Mr. Taylor had retired from business for many years, but the disability proved no handicap in chess, as he was well able to play the game blindfolded.

Having held the Plymouth championship for 16 years, besides being Devon champion, he was well known throughout the Westcountry, and at the time of his death was match captain for the county. He was a vice-president of the Plymouth Chess Club. With ten successes to his credit, he had held the Winter Wood Trophy for more years than anyone else.

Mr. Taylor was born in Liskeard. He was a member of Mutley Methodist Church, where the funeral will take place to-morrow. Mr. Taylor was a well-known figure at the Plymouth Liberal Club.>

MissScarlett: The 1921 census, taken on June 19th, records his age as 61 and 6 months, so it's touch and go whether he was born in 1859 or 1860.
