Phony Benoni: I'm glad nobody has given Choobak a hard time for his record. Having at least four games against GMs in open tournaments shows that you're a pretty decent player.

By the way, one of the drawbacks of Approved Chess Notation is that <R2d2> can never be the correct way to record a move. For instance, if you have the position:

White's only winning move is properly recorded as 1.Rcd2#, not 1.R2d2#. However, since when are chess players proper?

perfidious: Khosrow Choobak was a strong player from California; as I remember, he was 2300+ USCF in the mid 1980s.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Yes, I remember him from US Opens during that period. Don't think I ever learned what his first name was.

I should really rustle up a few of his wins and submit them. Balance the score a little.

Feb-27-11  esticles: <White's only winning move is properly recorded as 1.Rcd2#, not 1.R2d2#> Neither actually, it's 1. Rcd2+ since the black king can go to b2 :P

Phony Benoni: <esticles> That's a common misconception. The king cannot move into check from a pinned piece.

The way I remember this is that after 1...Kb2 White would be able to capture the king and end the game before his own king could be captured.

Feb-27-11  Benzol: <White's only winning move is properly recorded as 1.Rcd2#, not 1.R2d2#.>

"R2 I suggest a new strategy. Let the Wookie win".

Phony Benoni: I've submitted some wins by Choobak. He tied for 5th-12th at the 1983 US Open with a score of 9.5-2.5, winning the top Master prize, so he deserves some plaudits.

perfidious: One more on this player: he later went by the name Kasrow Chubak, and there's one game under that soubriquet in the DB.

<Phony Benoni> Thanks for posting more games on this player, whatever his name is! Good to see that he rather more than a punching bag for GMs, if one were to use the four games given in CG as the only information.
