... Wilhelm Adolf Carstanjen (1825 -1900), a nobleman from Duisburg, who in 1849 had arrived in Cologne; there he founded the 'Vom Rath Joest und Carstanjen', a sugar refinery that made him a rich man; between the fifties and the sixties, he was very much interested in chess, to such a point that he became the main promoter of the celebrated match between Anderssen and Morphy and was considered as the strongest player of Cologne and its environs; in 1859, he lost a match against Anderssen, with the decent result of + 3 -7 =1. On 21 December 1881, he obtained a Prussian tide of rank and moved to Berlin. He is remembered today mainly as a noteworthy art collector, who decided to open his private museum to the public.
