 | | HeMateMe: <stop believing everything you're told.> I'll just purge the 87 or so eye witness accounts and testimonies on record of Fischer being a low life person, from those who encountered him in life, then. Great person, poor character. Selfish, disloyal, insulting. just <one> example: When Fischer was a teen with no father figure at home sports writer/TV sports personality Dick Schaap would take Bob to Knicks games, now and then. Just what a kid needs, get away from the chessboard now and then, do some regular 'guy' stuff, the kind of things that aid in promoting emotional stability. Later, Fischer called Jeremy Schaap, the writer's son [also a reporter], "a garden variety Jew snake." |
Dec-04-18 | | Riverbeast: <HeHateMe> Dick Schaap also said Fischer "didn't have a sane bone in his body" in a public, printed article...But you left out that part of the story, didn't you? Of course you did. Because you're not here to tell the full story or the truth. You're not here to enlighten anybody, you're here to spout your slander and hate. Some very complimentary things you have to say about my friend and former teacher Bill Lombardy also. On his page. After his death. On his Birthday. You called Bill an arrogant, embarrassing, agitating loudmouth and drama queen. Coming from you, that's rich. Have you ever met Bill by the way? If so, how well did you know him? Or are you talking out of your ace? Is that why every thing you say stinks to high hell? Close your filthy mouth before someone seals it shut, Snake. You're starting to p**s me off now |

 | | perfidious: First met Bill at the 1984 New York Open, as we were introduced by mutual friend Dr Ed Epp. Seemed a decent enough fellow, without the star syndrome I have seen in some 'name' players in chess and poker across the years. Our second encounter was across the board, two years later, at the New England Open. Tough game, in which I let slip right around the time check in an ending which offered at least equal chances. We analysed afterwards and had at least one other good conversation during that tourney. Never got to talk with Bill again. |

 | | HeMateMe: < Dick Schaap also said Fischer "didn't have a sane bone in his body" in a public, printed article...But you left out that part of the story, didn't you?> He said those things <after> Fischer had bad mouthed Schaap for questioning Fischer's behavior, spitting on the state department order, going on Philippines radio and cheering on the twin towers attack that killed 3,000 people. In the very small world of Bobby Fischer NO ONE tells him he can't go to another country to make a living (Yugoslavia in this case). Bobby Fischer gets to make all the rules because he's so special. He died a lonely old man, mentally ill. I have met Bill Lombardy, several times. It's easy when there were only two brick and mortar chess clubs left in Manhattan and they were both in his neighborhood. He seemed nice enough, but I've heard he's had problems with other people. Look at that film that was shot of Lombardy screaming about the judge that ruled against him, declaring that he, Lombardy, had to pay the back rent on his 1br in Stuyvesant town, Manhattan east 20s. Just like Bobby Fischer, living in a fantasy world where you should be king if you're a good chess player. |

 | | Sally Simpson: ***
Hi Riverbeast,
"If you want to get outraged, consider that the makers of the well budgeted movie 'Pawn Sacrifice' did not pay Bill a dime, even though they used his name and persona. And Bill was broke at the time." Legally they are not obliged too but they let slip a great opportunity to have him on their side as a paid advisor, then a majority (...no all!) of the gaffs would have been avoided. The annoying thing about that film regarding gaffs was the scene where Bobby shows Bill how he could have beaten Petrosian with plausible line. Petrosian vs Lombardy, 1961 That bit is spot on, they could easily have had used some random more easily understood position in that scene to show a missed win. (actually comparing that chess scene with a lot of the others where they dumbed down the chess for the non-playing public, it is surprising they didn't.) So someone somewhere on the film set had some chess about them. I enjoyed the film though some gaffs were toe curling and could have been so easily avoided especially with Bill or any reasonable chess player on hand all the time. Of course for all we know they may have asked Bill and he knocked them back. *** |
Dec-27-18 | | RookFile: You got me confused about the word gaff. I spent some time with the dictionary. Gaffe is a social blunder. But gaff means harsh criticism (or a piece of fishing equipment). I think there were certainly both gaffs and gaffes involved with the movie. |
Dec-27-18 | | ughaibu: In the UK, "gaff" normally refers to a person's abode. |

 | | HeMateMe: I thought the scene on the beach was kind of weird. |
Mar-14-19 | | RookFile: Lombardy wanted this when he was alive. That's politics for you - let's wait until the guy is dead and then give it to him. |
Mar-14-19
 | | MissScarlett: Give over. Morphy had to wait 102 years. |
Mar-14-19 | | Granny O Doul: Lombardy actually declined it while he was alive. One of his gripes was that he was to have been inducted only after Berliner and Palciauskas, the two correspondence champs, on the basis that world champs of all sorts (composition, et al.) were to be regarded coequally, and inducted before mere grandmasters. Bill did point to his world junior title, but since that's still just chess, it wasn't enough. Also, they wanted him to contribute memorabilia and I guess he felt he was to honor them more than they him. Still, if we are to take the Hall seriously, I agree Lombardy has to be in whether he likes it or not. |
Dec-04-19 | | spingo: Did Lombardy ever make the hall of fame? |
Jul-18-20
 | | MissScarlett: When Lombardy left the priesthood he experienced an identity crisis. Here he thinks he's Orson Welles: https://twitter.com/olimpiuurcan/st... |
Jan-12-21 | | fabelhaft: <Two child sexual abuse survivors bring suit against the Archdiocese of New York and St. Mary's. Both plaintiffs claim to have been abused by the same two men-- Father Raymond Foster and Father William Lombardy--and each plaintiff had eerily similar experiences> https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel... |
Jan-13-21
 | | MissScarlett: Probably for the best that they waited for Lombardy to die first. By the end, he didn't have a pot to piss in. |

 | | FSR: The New York Post has the same story. https://nypost.com/2021/01/11/chess... Bizarrely, they illustrate it with a picture of Bobby Fischer?!? |
Jan-14-21 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: What "New York Post" wrote, is a horrible story - regardless if it is true or not. The problem is, that William Lombardy died 3 years ago and could not prove his innocence or concede his guilt. So his reputation as human being and maybe chess player also will be damaged or even destroyed in any case - very sad news indeed. |
Jan-14-21 | | SChesshevsky: Related to the allegations against Lombardy, think it's important to note that the "news" release noted above, which I'm assuming is also the key source for the Post, was issued by the involved law firm. Also interesting was a previous topic related press release by the same law firm. Linked to on the Lombardy press release page. Might raise questions about how much of this is related to justice and how much is related to business on something that's probably impossible to prove or disprove. |

 | | Joshka: <FSR> Typical behavior from the media to have folks believe their agenda, disgraceful indeed....but then again look what they do against our President. Nothing surprising just typical. Bobby called out the media all thru his years, over and over again, lies, lies, lies, manipulation....not an ounce of truth. Charges against Lombardy, but instead of showing his photo, they of course show Bobby Fischer!!! EVIL is not even strong enough for what they are!!! |
Jan-23-21
 | | FSR: Weird factoid: Lombardy is the third World Junior Champion to die. The first two were Tony Miles and Mark Diesen, both of whom died young. Apart from Lombardy, all of the first 12 World Junior Champions are still alive. The first three champions, Ivkov, Panno and Spassky, are all in their eighties. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World... |
Jun-24-21 | | Zugzwangovich: In his latest book "Bobby Fischer and His World", John Donaldson mentions Lombardy's "victory in the 1959 U.S. Invitational--a de facto national championship." Does anyone out there have a clue as to what this event was? |
Jun-24-21 | | Paint My Dragon: <Zugz> That would be the Log Cabin Invitational in West Orange, 7-22 August. Ten players, and quite a strong field when you consider that Sherwin finished last). Lombardy 7/9, Benko 6.5, Evans 6, Bisguier, R Byrne 5 ... etc. |
Jun-24-21
 | | perfidious: The irony is that Sherwin fared better in the actual 1959 US Championship, finishing eighth with 5/11. |
Jul-24-21 | | Caissanist: I'm not surprised by <FSR>'s factoid, it seems that relatively few GMs die from their late sixties to mid seventies--say, from ages 67 to 77. I guess the game makes sick people sicker, and healthy people healthier, or something like that. |
