  MissScarlett: Hastings & St. Leonard's Observer, February 9th 1935, p.19:

<A new star has arisen in the English chess firmament. Mr. C. V. Podger. of Kent County, has recently played eight games blindfold at Bromley and intends at the end of the season, to attempt 17 games simultaneously, sans voir. This will beat Mr. Blackburne's record of 16 games, which has stood for many years as the best by an English player. Mr. Podger has recently won the West Kent individual championship. He also tied for second place in the major tourney last Christmas in London.>
