Gunnar Uusi was born on June 23, 1931 in Haapsalu, Estonia. He won the Estonian Championship in 1958, 1959, 1963, 1966, 1979 and 1980, and finished second in 1960, 1961, and 1972. He had a 2-1 record against world champion Mikhail Tal. Tartu now regularly hosts the Gunnar Uusi memorial tournament for young chess players. Uusi died on August 7, 1981 in Tartu, Estonia.
