Jan-22-07  Whitehat1963: Take me now baby here as I am
Pull me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed

Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when Im in your hands
Take my hand come undercover
They cant hurt you now,
Cant hurt you now, cant hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us

Have I doubt when Im alone
Love is a ring, the telephone
Love is an angel disguised as lust
Here in our bed until the morning comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand as the sun descends
They cant touch you now,
Cant touch you now, cant touch you now
Because the night belongs to lovers ...

With love we sleep
With doubt the vicious circle
Turn and burns
Without you I cannot live
Forgive, the yearning burning
I believe its time, too real to feel
So touch me now, touch me now, touch me now
Because the night belongs to lovers ...

Because tonight there are two lovers
If we believe in the night we trust
Because tonight there are two lovers ...

May-17-08  whiteshark: Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine
meltin' in a pot of thieves
wild card up my sleeve
thick heart of stone
my sins my own
they belong to me, me

people say "beware!"
but I don't care
the words are just
rules and regulations to me, me

I-I walk in a room, you know I look so proud
I'm movin' in this here atmosphere, well, anything's allowed and I go to this here party and I just get bored
until I look out the window, see a sweet young thing
humpin' on the parking meter, leanin' on the parking meter oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling and then I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine ooh I'll put my spell on her

here she comes
walkin' down the street
here she comes
comin' through my door
here she comes
crawlin' up my stair
here she comes
waltzin' through the hall
in a pretty red dress
and oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling that I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine

and then I hear this knockin' on my door
hear this knockin' on my door
and I look up into the big tower clock
and say, "oh my God here's midnight!"
and my baby is walkin' through the door
leanin' on my couch she whispers to me and I take the big plunge and oh, she was so good and oh, she was so fine
and I'm gonna tell the world that I just ah-ah made her mine

and I said darling, tell me your name, she told me her name she whispered to me, she told me her name
and her name is, and her name is, and her name is, and her name is G-L-O-R-I-A G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria

I was at the stadium
There were twenty thousand girls called their names out to me Marie and Ruth but to tell you the truth
I didn't hear them I didn't see
I let my eyes rise to the big tower clock
and I heard those bells chimin' in my heart
going ding dong ding dong ding dong ding dong.
ding dong ding dong ding dong ding dong
counting the time, then you came to my room
and you whispered to me and we took the big plunge
and oh. you were so good, oh, you were so fine
and I gotta tell the world that I make her mine make her mine make her mine make her mine make her mine make her mine

G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria, G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria

and the tower bells chime, "ding dong" they chime
they're singing, "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine."

Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A, Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria, G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria, G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria .

Domdaniel: Hmmm. Blindfold in 1954 in the USA, he plays an under-18 event in Britain 13 years later. Not *impossible*, I suppose.

But one Psmith may be an escapee from a PG Wodehouse novel. I wouldn't bother to ask Jeeves ... Freddie Threepwood will know.

Phony Benoni: The "Philip D. Smith" who played Kim Commons at Ventura (CA) 1971 was from California, so he can probably be credited with the two games played at Hollywood 1954 and Monterey 1966. The game against Bisguier appears to have been from a tournament, not blindfold; see <Graham Clayton>'s note from the similarly labelled game Yarmak vs Bisguier, 1954. It should not be difficult to check that.

We seem to have a good number of Bisguier's games from the event: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

The other three games are surely a different player, probably British. Darn incomplete citations.

Domdaniel: <Phony> Yep. You know the way people are always saying things like "Nielsen in Denmark is like Smith in England"?

It seems Smith in America is also like Smith in English.

SteinitzLives: <Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine> Patti Smith's sins were different from everyone elses? No she was just full of Babel.

Domdaniel: <Steinitz> Patti Smith lives too, y'know. She certainly was alive and kicking last time I looked.

Was it young Wooster or one of the other Drones who said "Jeeves ironed for somebody's shirts, not mine" ...?

SteinitzLives: Yes, she is as healthy as horses, trampin all over frederick.
Feb-07-21  DWRussell: I was a chess student of Philip D. Smith and can remember him describing his loss to Bisguier on several occasions. He learned something from that game and was forward to teach and pass it on. He was interviewed and an article was written in the 'California Chess Journal' Summer 1999 issue. He had played many of the greats in simuls, from Lasker to Spassky, with good results.
