Isabelle Choko was born Izabela Sztrauch Galewska in Lodz, Poland. During World War II, she was interned by the Nazis in the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. When liberated, she weighed only 25 kg (55 lbs.). She was sent to Sweden to regain her health before joining one of her uncles in Paris in 1946.

In Paris, she met Arthur Choko, whom she married and with whom she has three children. Choko won the 1956 French Women's Championship. In 1957, she played second board for France at the 1st Chess Olympiad (women) in Emmen, scoring +4 =3 -4.

She died on July 21, 2023.
