  NewspaperChessArchiv: This biography was a bit difficult to pin down, until I discovered an article about attorney John Anson Emery's son whose own story explains everything.

The Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sunday, February 16, 1930

"LAW STUDENT CHESS WINNER
"Stephen Emery Takes Title in West Penn Tourney. Stephen Emery, the 22-year-old law student at the University of Pittsburgh, has won eight of his nine Western Pennsylvania chess tournament games and is proclaimed the 1930 champion for this section of the state. While attending Princeton he won the university chess tournaments during his sophomore and senior years, there being none held while He is the son of Atty. John A. Emery of Sewickley, who has been a member of the Pittsburgh Chess Club for 33 years. Kalman Erdeky, N. Craig St. druggist, was the champion in 1912, and Howard L. Dolde of West View held the honor from 1913 to 1926."
