  NewspaperChessArchiv: This is quite strange.

Positively Walter Elford Hill, with a brother of the name of F. A. Hill.

When applying for the job, the date given for birth is March 8, 1862.

NewspaperChessArchiv: That's Walter Elford Hill's application to the Railroad. He is listed as a clerk of the Railroad Office in this document.

Minnesota, U.S., Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905; 1895 Ramsey, Part 3 - City of St. Paul, Wards 3-4

The year was recorded wrong, but the date of birth is March 8.

The application states that somebody else compiled the application. That may account for the error on dob.

If in fact "March," then March 8 was given on the Railroad application.

I would go with March 8, 1858

Ancestry link to the Family Tree, click on the date of birth. The user linked 7 source citations for his date of birth.

NewspaperChessArchiv: The Registry of 1858 England and Wales

England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915 for Walter Elford Hill 1858, Q2-Apr-May-Jun

https://www.ancestry.com/search/col...

I fed this question into Google AI for explanation if the date of birth is March 08, 1858

Q. Do March births end up in the England and Wales, 1858 Apr-May-June registry?

AI Overview:
"Yes, births occurring in March in England and Wales in 1858 would typically be registered in the April-June quarter registry. This is because the legal timeframe for registering a birth is 42 days after the birth.

Here's why: Quarterly Registration: England and Wales' civil registration system, including birth records, was organized quarterly. The quarters were January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December.

Legal Timeframe: Parents had 42 days from the birth to register it. March Births: A birth occurring in March would have had its registration deadline fall within the following April-June quarter."
