KEVIN GENTES
(born Dec-07-1967, died May-01-2021, 53 years old) Canada

[what is this?]

FIDE Master. He tied 1st-3rd in the 1987 Canadian Junior Championship. Between 1989-93, he either tied for 1st (clear 1st: 1990 and 1992; tie-break of 1st-2nd for 1st: 1989 (with Aron Kaptsan tied 2nd-3rd after 1st-3rd tiebreak: 1991 (again tying with Aron, where Arthur Prystenski took tie-break); and tied 1st/2nd without using a tie-breaker in 1993 with Frank Kollar) or came in better than 3rd on 1st-3rd tie-breaks in the championship tournaments of Manitoba. In the 2004 Manitoba open, another 3-way tie with Sam Cleto and Samuel Lipnowski came about as well, with the latter splitting on tie-breaks for 1st part of 1st-3rd, but no tie-breaker was indicated for his 1st-2nd split of the 1990 Manitoba open (again with Prystenski).

Feb-09-05  TheParadigm: I've actually had the pleasure of meeting this chap, a really nice guy. He lives in the same city as me. The reason I was looking him up was that he actually scored a victory against Yusupov when he was third in the world, and I was wondering if anyone had the game anywhere. Any takers?

IMlday: Yusupov vs K Gentes, 1986

Winnipeg ratings were often untrustworthy. The city is long distance from major population centres and local masters got stronger playing each other but overall the rating pool was stagnant. Gentes solved this by working for the railroad so he could be in Toronto one weekend and Vancouver the next.

OhioChessFan: Two principles govern the moral and intellectual world. One is perpetual progress, the other the necessary limitations to that progress. If the former alone prevailed, there would be nothing steadfast and durable on earth, and the whole of social life would be the sport of winds and waves. If the latter had exclusive sway, or even if it obtained a mischievous preponderancy, every thing would petrify or rot. The best ages of the world are those in which these two principles are the most equally balanced. In such ages every enlightened man ought to adopt both principles, and with one hand develop what he can, with the other restrain and uphold what he ought.
Aug-26-08  cliffordgoodman: It would be nice to see Kevin participate in the Abe Yanofsky Memorial this year. He hasn't played a rated game since that tournament from last year.

May-03-21  TheNige: Sad news, notes MCA blogger Tony Boron:

Edward Tang reports " that FM Kevin Gentes passed away May 1, 2021. Kevin passed away after a stroke in the St. Boniface Hospital of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Despite being inactive from Winnipeg chess lately, he was residing in Winnipeg."

Rest in Peace, Kevin.
