| | Tabanus: Reposted from the Bistro (post by <TheFocus>): The power-packed teams of the Manhattan and Marshall Chess Clubs, which always face each other in the final round of the Metropolitan Chess League, clashed once more in the rooms of the defending and pereniallly successful Manhattan champions. The Marshall challengers, with a line-up that probably could have beaten any other team in the country except the Manhattans, made a close fight of it before succumbing by 6 – 7. Manhattan winners were William Lombardy, Bobby Fischer, Daniel Beninson and Walter Shipley, while full points for the Marshall Club were registered by Carl Pilnick, Saul Wachs and A. E. Santasiere. Draws (Manhattan players mentioned first) were registered as follows: Arthur Bisguier vs. Sidney Bernstein; Abe Turner vs. Herbert Seidman; I. A. Horowitz vs. James Sherwin; Dr. H. Sussman vs. John W. Collins; George Shainswit vs. T. A. Dunst; and <Karl Vine> vs. Edward Lasker. Other teams in the League besides the "Big Two" were the Manhattan Reserves, the Marshall Raiders, who tied for third place, and the Queens Chess Club – <Chess Review, July, 1957>, pg. 196. |

| | Tabanus: Bistro: <This makes me think he is the "Karl Vine" who got divorced from "Irma" in Dade (Miami) in 1946.> It most probably is. The two had same street address in New York: 138 W 100 St. - Karl Vine on 13 Dec. 1945 and Irma Vine on 4 Feb. 1946. |

Karl WeinstockKarl Weinstock (30) arrived at San Francisco on 28 August 1940, having sailed from Yokohama. The ship's manifest shows him as Hebrew, born in Poland, with Sweden as his last residence. His 1941 Declaration of Intention document in regards to his application for citizenship in the USA shows that 'Karl Vine, formerly known as Karl Weinstock', was living in NY city. In 1942 he married Irma Gould (<Tabanus> referred to their divorce. |

New York Naturalization Records, declaration of intention 23 April 1941: <Karl Vine, formerly known as Karl Weinstock ... 53 E 97 Street NY ... Unemployed ... 30 years old ... born on April 26, 1910, in Stanislau Poland ... race Hebrew .. My last place of foreign residence was Stockholm Sweden ... I emigrated to the United States from Yokahama Japan ... at San Francisco, Calif. under the name of Karl Weinstock on August 28, 1940, on the SS Rakuyo Maru.> |
