(Dr) Josef Kupper was born on the 10th of March 1932 in Luzern, Switzerland. Awarded the IM title in 1955 he was Swiss Champion in 1954, 1957 and 1962. Kupper was also a chess composer (1).

Kupper, always an amteur player, was awarded the IM title by FIDE in 1955, as one of only six players worldwide that year.
