Oct-17-23  Alan McGowan: Joppen adopted a new name.

The CG biographical information states that he won the German Junior Chess Championship in 1943. This tournament was titled the Reichsmeisterschaft der Hitler-Jugend. There were 21 competitors in three groups, with the top four playing in a Final.

The results were: Gilles 2½, Keiling 1½, Schmid 1½, Samuel ½. (Deutsche Schachzeitung, October 1943.)

Schmid was Lothar Schmid as shown by the DSZ, July 1944, which referred to "16 jährige Schmid (Radebeul) - der zweite der HJ-Reichsmeisterschaft 1943."

Gilles/Joppen participated in the 4th General Government Championship at Bad Krynica 1943. He finished with 3 points, wins against Roepstorff, Edith Keller and Nowarra. Two of his games from this event will be submitted to CG.
