X COLOSSUS (COMPUTER)
(born 1958) United Kingdom

[what is this?]
Martin Bryant was its programmer and he also developed a draughts playing program (again called Colossus) which had used a couple of concepts called principle variation search and also had a relatively strong opening (checkers) book search functionality during the 1980s. A fellow programmer named Jonathan Shaeffer of the University of Alberta computer science group made a friendly exchange of 6-man draughts endgame database solutions for his opening books, which contained about 10x as many positions had as its rival chess playing Chinook program at the time (1).
