In 1986 he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE and the title of Grandmaster in 2000.
For the Croatian team he took part in the Chess Olympiads in 2000 and 2002 and in the 2003 European Team Championship. He played with Monaco at the 2018 Chess Olympiad.
In addition to playing club chess in Croatia (he took part in the European Club Cups in 1993 and 1994 with ŠK Mursa Osijek and in the European Club Cup 2007 with ŠK Zagreb ), he also played in France: from 2001 to 2006 for the Club de Echiquier Niçois, in the 2007/08 season for Club de La Tour Hyéroise, 2016 and 2017 for Nice Alekhine, with whom he also took part in the 2017 European Club Cup, and in 2019 for CEMC Monaco.
In January 2011, he reached his highest Elo rating of 2565. In 2012, he won the San Remo Open with 6.5 points from seven matches.
He died after a long illness on September 4, 2019 and was buried in his adopted home Monaco. Until his death, Šulava was married to Martine Dubois, who holds the title of WIM.
