wordfunph: Tahir Vakhidov is a GM from Uzbekistan with current rating of 2506..

Jul-25-14  zanzibar: The FIDE card for this player has quite a different spelling for both names:

<Vahidov, Tair>

Vahidov vs Vakhidov (<CG> adds "k") Tair vs Tahir (<CG> adds "h")

Stonehenge:, sorry but I really believe you are nitpicking. Sounds in foreign languages sometimes cannot be properly translated into English. It's no big deal.
Jul-25-14  zanzibar: <Stonehenge> perhaps you're right.

But don't forget I'm also doing this from the perspective of trying to automate as much as I can in software.

And software isn't so good in phonetics either, but does care about letters.

I prefer to follow FIDE when possible. Part of the reason for that, other than having a central authority to follow, is my feeling that the player involved gets some say in the matter. Presumably.

But apparently not in this case!

It's also funny that OlimpBase (which uses Vahidov has pictures of all the other players on the Uzbekistan Men's Team except for his - and he's the team captain!

But my preferred photograph of this player can be found here:

Jul-25-14  zanzibar: Urbekistan has an involved "written" history:

<Before the 1920s, the written language of Uzbeks was called Turki (known to Western scholars as Chagatay) and used the Nastaʿlīq script. In 1926 the Latin alphabet was introduced and went through several revisions throughout the 1930s. Finally, in 1940, the Cyrillic alphabet was introduced by Soviet authorities and was used until the fall of Soviet Union. In 1993 Uzbekistan shifted back to the Latin script, which was modified in 1996 and is being taught in schools since 2005.[86]>

Vakhidov is older, so probably joined FIDE when Cyrillic was in use. His Cyrillic name is probably:

Тахир Абдукахарович Вахидов

Tahir Abdukaharovych Vohidov (google translation)

It also contains this additional bio info:

Date of Birth: December 11, 1963, Samarkand
Rank: Grand Master (2009)
Maximum rating: 2546 (January 2003)
Current rating 2490

Nov-04-20  BIDMONFA: Tahir Abdukaharovich Vakhidov
