Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-09-08  M.D. Wilson: People have claimed that this player is Alexei Leonov, a pioneering cosmonaut in the Soviet Space Program who was the first man to walk in space (on March 8, 1965).
Nov-14-08  M.D. Wilson: Can anyone confirm?
Dec-30-08  M.D. Wilson: I assume this is indeed Alexei Leonov, after some reading.
Jan-25-09  M.D. Wilson: Those cosmonauts must have been clever fellows. In a country whose national sport was chess, they were no doubt solid, competetive players.
May-31-15  ChessLover100: I am sure it is Alexei Leonov but not 100% sure.
Jul-14-22  wrap99: Leonov the cosmonaut died in 2019 -- too bad no one asked him but I assume if he has a widow or kid, they would have been told of the games their dad played against a world champ. I note that his bio in Wikipedia shows him to be a man of varied interests although chess is not listed. Finally, Tal and Leonov would have been juniors in 1949 and 1950, much more plausible that they could have played before Tal became a titled player.
