Francisco Javier Sanz Alonso was born in Salamanca. In 1971, he was second in Spanish Junior Chess Championship. He was Spanish Champion in 1973, but in 1980 and 1982 he twice won silver medal in this tournament. He was awarded the IM title in 1977.

  Stonehenge: <International Master Francisco Javier Sanz Alonso has passed away in Salamanca, his hometown, at the age of 69. An outstanding player at a national level already in his youth, Javier was absolute champion of Spain in 1973, at just 20 years old, and made his debut a year later with the Spanish team at the Nice Olympiad. He was one of the mainstays of Spanish chess in the 70s, playing five Olympics: Nice 74, Haifa 76; Buenos Aires 78, Malta 80, and Luzerna 82. Already in more recent times. He lived for many years in Bogotá where he participated in different activities to promote school chess.>
