whiteshark: Is he the Figler on the Rook?
Jul-04-17  Mudphudder: This guy is one of the nicest, most considerate person I have ever met over the chess board. Even at this ripe age o his, he is still a powerful force at the Marshall Chess Club today.

I enjoyed watching you dominate the competition at Marshall today, I'm very impressed by your positional style. I hope my kids can take lessons from you one day soon!

hemy: <Mudphudder> I played against him in 1967 (Soviet Union "Spartakiada" team tournament, 15 Soviet Republics plus Moscow and Leningrad).

I Figler vs N Kasimov, 1967

Jul-05-17  Mudphudder: Hemy - that's great! What tournament was this that you were paired against him?? And what strength were you two at the time you played against each other in 1967?

hemy: <Mudphudder> In 1967 I played in Lithuanian National team in the "Spartakiada" tournament that was dedicated to 50th Anniversary of the October Revolution.

Figler was already one of the best players in Moldavia and played on masters level.

After the last round I was approached by official from USSR chess federation and invited to play in special tournament for "Master" title: 7 young "Master Candidates" playing 2 rounds against 7 masters. I declined the invitation because my exams in University were postponed and chess wasn't my priority. Interestingly that this tournament was held in my city - Vilnius and many of "Candidates" succeed to get the "Master" title. Among them were Evgeni Ellinovich Sveshnikov and Rafael Vaganian The masters norm was 7.5/14. Sveshnikov finished with 12/14.

Thanks for posting. I had the pleasure of getting clobbered by him in a weekend tournament, and then having him patiently and politely go over the game with me -- it was a good lesson from a real gentleman.
