Check It Out: Nice. Great stories from Larry C.

Its hard to replace Donald Fagen on vocals.

There's a local group here, Nearly Dan, saw them some time ago; amazing.

saffuna: I saw a Steely Dan-type concert in January, with several band veterans, plus the current drummer. It was basically Steely Dan with Fagen or Becker.

The funny thing was they sort of blasted away through the songs, with the drummer out front. In my opinion they sort of blasted past all the subtlety in the original versions.

Check It Out: I saw Steely Dan with Fagen and Becker at The Gorge in George, WA. This is one of the most beautiful venues around. With the sun setting over the canyon, they busted out Kid Charlemane and played for hours. Becker did much of the guitar work, and their lead guitarist was none of the guys from the records, but he was obviously very good.

As for drummers, Bernard Purdie and his "Purdie shuffle" found on Babylon Sisters is legendary. Aja as a whole is a phenomenal re ord.

keypusher: A friend of ours is one of the top session drummers in Nashville. Plays in a band that does a lot of Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire covers. Really something to hear.

perfidious: How 'bout a decade earlier?

My tastes are less refined than those of others, but Orlons and <South Street> seemed fine choice:

offramp: Elvis Costello had a great idea for a jingle for <Brobat Bloo>, with the voice of Kenneth Williams.

But Kenny died, and the company folded.

Elvis Costello rejigged the jingle and it became....

Great guitarists, but I enjoyed the bass most of all.

One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. I'd love to hear it live in an old European Church.
