Igor Aleksandrovich Nikolayev was born in Borovichi of Novgorod Region, USSR (Novgorod is one of the most important historic cities in Russia and its original capital over a millennium ago). He started playing chess at age 10. He achieved the title of FIDE Master in 1990.

He was Novgorod joint champion in 1982, co-winner of Russia NW Spartakiada in Smolensk, 1982, and played at the Russia Spartakiada Final in Krasnodar in 1983, which was topped by leading Soviet grandmasters Lev Polugaevsky, Vitaly Tseshkovsky and Yuri Razuvaev. In 1988, Nikolayev was Khabarovsk champion (Khabarovsk is the largest city of Russian Far East). He won the Russia Championship Quarter-Final in Cherepovets in 1989 and tied for 2nd-3rd next year in Belgorod, and had a plus score in the Russia Championship Semi-Finals in 1989, 1990, and 1991. In 1991, he left competitive chess to devote himself entirely to his profession.

Nikolayev moved to the United States in 1996 on a business contract, as a software engineer, and later became a naturalized US citizen. In 2013, he tied for 1st-2nd at the New York State Championship. (1)

In 2004, he was 2nd-3rd, after GM Hikaru Nakamura, whom he drew in the penultimate round. (2) In 2005, he was 2nd-3rd, after GM Gata Kamsky (3) He also won the New York State Class Championship in 2002. (4) He was joint winner of the 4th and 6th International Bad Ragazer Oster-Open in 2009 and 2011, Switzerland (5, 6).

Igor has also won hundreds of smaller local tournaments in Rochester and upstate NY.
