MissScarlett: <Jacob Schumer was the nephew of Dr Julius Perlis.>

I read that too, although Jacob was around 10 years older. Not impossible, of course, but a bit icky, if the details are all correct.

1915: <Schumer, Jacob, "Melrose", Hodford-rd. Golders Green, N. W. (Tel. Hampstead 6940) - M.D. Vienna 1894; M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. Lond. 1902; (Vienna); late Ho. Surg. Caroline Childr. Hosp.> (UK Medical Directory 1915)

1928 (publ.): <AN AMUSING NEW CHESS BOOK. We have received from Printing-Craft, 34, Red Lion Street, W.C.r, a copy of Dr. Schumer’s curiously named “Chesslets.” As Mr. W. H. Watts remarks in his Introduction, it will be welcomed by the player to whom Chess is a recreation only. The games are annotated with quotations from poets and philosophers of all the ages, and, except for a few slips of the pen, they are accurate, apt, and amusing. There is a good collection of the author’s problems, and a very interesting chapter on stalemate in master-play. The letterpress and diagrams have the clearness and elegance we expect from the publishers, and altogether Dr. Schumer’s “Comicbudget” is well worth the six shillings it costs.> (Illustrated London News, 4 May 1929)

1932: <Schumer Jacob of 107 Hodford-road Golders Green Middlesex died 14 December 1932 Probate London 14 January to Matilda Josephine Schumer widow. Effects L 40.>

<GOLDERS GREEN. WREATHS FROM CHESS CLUBS. Colleagues’ Tributes to the Late Dr. Jacob Scbumer. The funeral of Dr. Jacob Schumer, of 107, Hodford-road, Golders Green, the noted chess expert, took place at Golders Green Crematorium, last Friday. The principal mourners were Mrs. Schumer and her two sons, and there were a number of friends of the late doctor present. The service was conducted in the Crematorium Chapel by the Rev. Leslie Edgar, of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, St. John’s Wood. Among the wreaths were flowers from members of the National Liberal Club Chess Circle, and members of the City of London Chess Club (“With deepest svmpathv and affectionate remembrance”).> (Hendon & Finchley Times, 23 December 1932, p. 15)

<Obituary: Dr J. Schumer, London: We deeply regret to hear of the death of this cultured literateur and exponent of chess - an old friend and frequent contributor of ours. Last Thursday London “News Chronicle” announced the doctor’s sad death thus: — “The death has taken place the age of 63 of Dr J. Schumer, for many years chess editor of the old ‘Westminster Gazette’ and special correspondent for the ‘News Chronicle’ at many recent chess tournaments. He was a very well known figure in the chess world, a fine problem composer, and, in his prime, a very strong player. “His last book on chess, ‘Chesslets,’ was an ingenious composition in which every move in the games recorded was accompanied by a quotation which illustrated the compiler’s extraordinarily wide reading. Ho was for a short time match captain of the National Liberal Club chess team till ill-health forced him to resign. “He died at his house, 107 Hodford Road, Golders Green, of asthma and heart trouble. “A very kindlv, unassuming, and cultured man, he will be much missed by a wide circle of friends.”> (Linlithgowshire Gazette, 23 December 1932, p. 8)

Tabanus: When Lasker visited London Chess Club in 1912, it was Dr. J. Schumer who welcomed him because he could speak German.

I read that somewhere today, but cannot find it again.
