Jan-11-07  Archives: I heard that this is the Schmidt from the "Crane, Poole & Schmidt" legal firm.

Can anyone confirm this!?

Jan-11-07  Karpova: He is obviously german (judging from his name and the events he participated in). I doubt this was the same person playing Darga in 1955 but just speculation.
May-01-09  whiteshark: Wolfgang Schmidt
Birthdate 1-5-1950
Nationality GER
Elo (01-01-2009) 2078
FIDE number 4650115

I tend to agree with <Karpova>'s speculation due to birthdate... :D

Stonehenge: The chap from the Darga game was:

Wolfgang Schmidt

FIDE number 4631552
Birthdate 1919, April 06th
Nationality GER

Still on FIDE's rating list :)

Dec-22-21  Alan McGowan: Following on from the 2011 posting by <Stonehenge>.

The Wolfgang Schmidt with dob 6 April 1919 was born in Leipzig. This was mentioned in Caissa 1955, p126, which also referred to his 4th place in the 1952 Berlin Championship. There, he finished with 10/16, which included a win against 3rd-placed Kurt Richter.

Hans-Joachim Hecht refers to Schmidt in his book Rochaden Schacherinnerungen (2015). He gives his dob, confirms he was a member of the Tempelhof club, and mentions that around 1953/54 Schmidt moved to Hamburg.

Perhaps he should be given his own page, so that any games attributed to him - including those from the 1955 Klaus Junge Memorial - do not get placed with one of the other Wolfgangs.

He also played in the 1953 championship of West Berlin, finishing in a tie for 8/9th places.

Jan-20-22  Chessist: Games 1 to 15 (German Bundesliga, team Favorite Hammonia, Hamburg) and 21 were played by Wolfgang Schmidt born 1919.
