Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-04-14  Karpova: This could be August Oppenheim. He died on April 14, 1911, at 1030 after a short but severe suffering at the age of 69. He had been honorary president of the Mannheim Chess Club and was one of its co-founders in February 1865.

Oppenheim was married to Cäcilie Oppenheim (née Simons). He had a bank institute and earned millions. August died childless. The couple sent packets to the poor, especially around christmas time.

August played the violin and an ardent fan of music. He was a believing and educated jew.

In 1910, he acquired a cold from which he didn't recover.

He was a strong amateur chess player and subsidised local, national and international tournaments. His chess friend was engineer Richard Prager, with whom he spent time on chess for some hours every Sunday.

jnpope: This game comes from the <Field>, 1874.12.26, p671, which states:

<The following pretty little game was played some time ago at Simpson's Divan, between Herr Zukertort and Herr Oppenheim, a strong Hungarian amateur.>

Was August Oppenheim a Hungarian by birth and later moved to Mannheim?

jnpope: I suspect this is Hugo Oppenheim; became secretary of the Austria-Hungarian Chess Association in 1891, died 22-January-1896 in Vienna, but traveled extensively.
Apr-03-24  Chessist: Official announcement of his death:
