Telemus: Professor Franke was the principal of the Realgymnasium (a kind of secondary school) in Celle. His participations in Leipzig 1877 and Braunschweig 1880 made him known outside of Celle. In Celle he founded the local chess club (possibly stil existing as "Celler Schachclub von 1878") and the "Celler Schachkränzchen".

From his obituary in DSZ 1891, where his date of death is given as 24 February (instead of 22 February above which probably is taken from Gaige, who gives as additional sources "Braunschweig Magistrat's Office" and DWS, and his name as Dr August Wilhelm Eduard Franke).
